“Ma is flabbergasted. You’d think she got engaged.”
Maura laughed as she started thumbing through her wardrobe looking for the right outfit.
“Engaged. Did you really, say it out loud, Jane?”
“Yes, I did. Can you believe? Are you okay that it wasn’t all that old school down on your knee stuff?” Jane was rummaging luggage for her black pumps while they were getting ready for their guests.
“Honey, I am so flattered that we are finally on the same page. I don’t care if it was Morse code or smoke signals. I don’t care how it came about. Although, Constance will wonder about it when she inquires. She knows, by the way,” Maura calmly tossed in at the end.
    “Knows about us, Jane.”
“What do you mean? When did you talk to her, did you tell her?” Jane look frazzled as Maura glanced at her from the closet.
“She told me. During the ride home from the hospital. Basically, she outted us and said we were both nearly forty and needed to get on the ball. I was mortified. Then I had plenty of time the last few weeks with you taking care of me, waiting on me hand and foot and that coupled with how long we have been together, it made sense. I also tossed in there the fact that I don’t last with men and I wanted to rip your clothes off every time I saw you.”
“Damn, Maura! Why didn’t you say something?” Jane was pretty stunned at the confession and blushed bright red when Isles came right back with “So why didn’t you say something then?”
“So this really has been a pretty long courtship all things considered,” Jane muttered.
“I think so,” Maura confirmed. “Don’t you? I’d walk down the aisle with you tomorrow for that matter.”
“Wow, Maura. I….am pretty stunned.” Jane sat on the edge of the bed having retrieved the heels and started looking for a slip. She might have to borrow from Maura.
“Wouldn’t you, Jane? I mean, after all what we have been through, covered in each other’s blood, hours at hospital bedsides, wine, fire and gourmet food; the last few days of indescribable lovemaking and the thought that we get another 30 years of this…wouldn’t you marry me right away?”
Maura emerged in the Vera Wang and was already cussing under her breath about having to go without heels. She was a little hurt that Jane even hesitated about the urgency behind their marriage.
“Jane you almost die every day. I want to be with you every day til that happens and frankly, I am hoping it is me first. I don’t want to be without you.”
Jane wrapped her arms around Maura and discovered the Vera was backless. It caught her breath.
“Maura, if we could get married tomorrow and my mother would let us, I would crawl to the courthouse on my knees, but you know she is going to want some church hoo-ha thing. Constance will want some country club hoo-ha thing and we are their only daughters, so we sort of owe them. I know that sounds jacked up, but yes, I would elope and marry you immediately if our families wouldn’t go batshit crazy. And before you even ask, my father is not walking me down the aisle. It will be Frankie or Vince.”
Maura was content with the answer and the reasoning behind it, but at least she knew Jane was up for beginning the planning.
Jane glanced at the shoeless wonder and suggested, “Just wear the bunnies, babe.”
“Jane!” Maura socked her in the arm and was immediately apologizing for the force she used.
“What if the guys aren’t happy for us, Jane?” Maura turned around for Jane to zip the Vera, and hesitated.
“Then the next fifteen years til I retire will be crappy then. Seriously, Maura, they are our closest friends. They are just going to want us to be happy, don’t you think? They have been insinuating for no less than three years that something is already going on. Tell you what, babe. This is our party. We did tell them poker, so they will be underdressed for sure. Let’s dress down a bit and save Ms. Wang for an evening when go out to dinner.”
Maura kissed Jane’s cheek and then said, “Honey, I can’t believe you knew this was a Vera Wang. I’m so proud of you.”
“Besides, Maur, then they will decide right away we are lipstick lesbians. “
“Lipsticks? What does that mean,” she inquired with a furrowed brow.
    “Extremely girly girl, Maura.”
“Well, I am, Jane!” Maura raised her eyebrows afraid some sort of profanity was going to come forth.
“And I love every bit of that, Maura. That’s how the guys have seen you every day. I am not always comfortable dressed that way though, and right now you are ‘grounded’ from your footwear. If we dress comfy, we will fit in with the fellas. Don’t worry, these rocks will still sparkle, but not as much as you do. We can have a real engagement party later.”
Jane pulled Maura into a passionate kiss and they stood there a few moments quietly holding one another. Jane could not get her mind off Maura in the backless dress. It would be too difficult to think about guests, not think about undressing her later.
“So, baby, how did you know about ‘lipsticks’ anyway,” Maura inquired softly.
“Research. I do read, Dr. Isles.”
Maura giggled and came back with “Was it in Popular Mechanics, smartass?”
Jane’s jaw hit the floor. Maura Isles had officially cracked a joke, a good one even. She knew she could not let this woman go. This evening was going to go better than planned.
Both women fished out Calvin’s and slid into the denim simultaneously.
“See isn’t this so much better for your bare feet or the bunnies,” Jane teased. “Pretty blouse, Maura.” Jane ran her hand across Maura’s arm and complimented her then
Buttoned up the white dress shirt for herself.
“Thanks, Jane. Your mom should be back anytime. It was sweet for her to make the deli run. Are you really going to play poker?”
Jane grinned. “Uh, no. I will be too distracted looking at you and telling the guys not to look at you.”
“Oh, Jane.” Maura mellowed as she looked into the brunette’s eyes and felt herself slipping into them even more. Maura blushed when she felt Jane’s hands travelling the back of her jeans and landing on her ass.
“I do like you in these Calvin’s, Maur.”
“Thank you. You look pretty terrific too.” Maura returned the compliment.
“In fact, I am thinking about a one drink limit so we can send everyone home by nine, put on our pj’s and celebrate your liberation from the house boot arrest. Dr. Isles, you are officially released from house arrest.”
Jane nibbled Maura’s neck and jumped at the sound of her mother’s voice.
“Okay, lovebirds. That’s no way to keep your secret.”
“Ma!” Jane’s eyes almost popped out. “You look great in that that wrap thing. I don’t know what it’s called, but it looks like a Donna Karan.”
“You have been studying,” Maura grinned and held on to Jane’s arm for balance while she leaned down and tugged the bunny slippers on both feet.
“Well you two may be playing poker tonight, but I don’t intend to be. “ Angela raised her eyebrows a couple times and both she and Maura expected Jane to complain. Surprisingly, she did not.
    “Is Shawn coming over, Angela?”
“Yeah he is, Maura.” She confirmed like a starry-eyed schoolgirl.
“So, Maura, we need a plan,” Jane inserted.” And remember, Ma, not a word. First, let’s take off our rings and act normal when everyone gets here.”
Frankie stuck his head in the front door, simultaneous with knocking a couple times.
“Just in time, my son,” Angela chided. “Come help with the groceries.”
“So are you ready for this, Dr. Isles,” Jane grinned at Maura, hoping it would help with any nerves that either of them may have. Maura’s answered calmed Jane even more.
“Yes, I am, Detective. I love you, Jane. No matter what happens tonight. That will never change.”
“Maura, it’s all going to be good. I promise and I love you too.”
