    THE GETAWAY 12. Maura’s Missing

3> ”Barry, holy shit! Where’s Maura? Maura!” Jane charged up the hallway half dressed and totally unravelled.
    > ”Jane, relax! She took something into the backyard to Jo Friday. It’s been less than 5 minutes.”
    > ”Barry, her bedclothes are on the floor and she didn’t go outside bare ass naked. Call the unis watching the house.”
    > Jane ran at the back door, yanked it open screaming ”Maura!” into the darkness.
    >
    >
    > Impulsive. That’s all Jane Rizzoli could think of herself at the moment. She and Maura Isles made love, ring shopped, cancelled Jane’s lease and planned a life together in less than 48 hours. It didn’t feel sudden after five yrs. of genuine compassion, friendship and the flirtiness of cat and mouse, but it was sudden.
    > The moment they left Maura’s orthopedic appointment, they headed to a jeweler, and then called a moving company for Jane’s sparsely furnished apartment.
    > Maura wanted to begin house hunting right away, but Jane said no. She liked Maura’s current digs and assured her she would be happy wherever they lived, so long as they are together. So now she was in Maura’s life, in Maura’s house only Maura had disappeared.
    > Jane clenched both her teeth and her fist, slamming it into the back door with a guttural groan. It escalated and burned out of her throat with only one thought.
    > Paddy Doyle.
    > Korsak arrived in less than 10 minutes and headed straight to the bedroom. He didn’t even speak to Frost, who was standing with Angela by the shoulders trying to calm her when Frankie arrived.
”Jane, I know you can’t speak, so just listen, okay,” Vince began. Korsak sat on the edge of the bed and gathered the sobbing woman into his arms.
”We will find her and bring her home and we will do that before we make another move on the six cadavers. But, you know we have to sweep this room for evidence, anything that will help us find her. You know you can’t be part of the investigation.
”Only you, Korsak,” Rizzoli choked out. Jane already felt assaulted and devastated. She did not want to add invaded to the list.
”I’m going to turn around for two minutes in order for you to collect your dignity or get dressed. Then after that, we have to have the room.”
Jane could not let go of him. She felt like Vince was holding her together and if she did let go, she would shatter. He held her like her father used to and should be now, if she had not shut him out. She was as stubborn a Rizzoli as he was. Even Angela had been civil with him. Maura had been urging Jane to talk to him and not spend her life resenting him like she had with Paddy.
Maura. Where was she? What had happened? Oh God, there would be a written report. Perhaps, Vince would let her write it out then just browse and sign it.
Attempting to pull herself together, she let go of Vince and he stood. Ever the gentleman, he turned away as Jane dove for the middle of the bed. She retrieved their strap on in a panic, stuck it under the edge of the bed in her gun safe and spun the combination lock. She grabbed Maura’s silk robe to cover the shirt she was wearing.
If there were other sex toys strewn with the lingerie, Korsak would just have to decide if he wanted to put them into evidence. Hopefully, they would not disturb Maura’s closet or shoe sanctuary, but Jane couldn’t be sure. If they did then they would find Maura’s leather. Oh hell, Maura, what has happened?
”You ready for the official interview,” Korsak inquired in his ’on duty’ voice, which gave Jane another nudge toward pulling herself together.
Walking out of the bedroom, Jane almost mowed over Chang, who was carrying the evidence camera.
”I knew this might be sensitive, Det. Rizzoli, so when Dr Isles is out of the office, I am second chair.”
”Thank you, Suzie,” Jane responded, trying to ignore the remark about Maura being gone.
”I just realized Maura wore this robe last night. Let me grab something else to wear.”
    ”Of course,” Chang replied reverently.
Jane pulled running pants and Maura’s oversized BCU sweatshirt on. She couldn’t find her BPD shirt and figured it was in the laundry. Maura had practically worn it to death, and Jane seriously needed to invest in a couple more.
Maura. The thought of her made Jane draw in a hard breath. She started to leave the room and Chang called her back.
”Detective, could you do a walk through with me? I will be taking photos and I am not sure what I am looking for or looking at.”
Suzie hesitated and Jane already knew what Chang was stumbling over.
”I know Maura, Dr Isles, usually walks you through a crime scene, but this will be so much easier. We do not have a body to process.”
Jane was pissed at herself a moment after she said it. Then she reassured herself and repeated it again under her breath. No body. Maura is fine. Jane had to believe it.
”Korsak, Chang needs me to stay briefly, let’s get started.”
    ”Of course,” he nodded.
Chang snapped half a dozen pictures and documented what Jane identified. Maura’s robe, panties, nightshirt, hairbrush, and bunny slippers. Bagged.
”This is her side of the bed and nightstand. I sleep on the other side, but haven’t moved in here proper. My gun safe is on the floor, locked and other than the jeans and shirt in the hamper, my stuff is in the guest room.”
Korsak snapped on rubber gloves and reached inside the nightstand. He ran the fingerprint brush across something and a moment later, extracted it.
”Here,Jane, take this.” Vince handed Jane the ring box, adding ”BPD can’t afford to insure this as evidence.”
    ”It is stunning,” Chang mused.
Maura’s gone and left her ring behind? Now what was Jane supposed to think?
”No signs of violence or struggle,” Chang spoke into the recorder. Chang flashed the backlight and before she could stop herself, she announced, ”There are bodily fluids. However, no blood present. Oh sorry, Rizzoli,” she quickly added.
They weren’t going to find anything. Jane kept gasping deep breaths to hold in her tears. She had to believe Maura was fine. She couldn’t imagine Maura with cold feet. She would’ve been too practical to leave her own home. Maura would have rented Jane a new apartment before walking out on her own life and home. Jane felt broken and destroyed, but suddenly realized if she wanted to be any part of finding Maura, she needed to put feelings aside and put her Detective Rizzoli persona back. Jane didn’t know if it would work. It was too hard to keep Maura out of her thoughts.

Jane heard a sturdy knock at the front door and answered. Usually, Maura got it. Maura did so many things that made this house the perfect home and Jane realized it over the weeks they had been off in which she has had to pinch hit. Groceries, mail, drycleaning, car wash. All those chores had been reallocated to Jane while Maura was off her feet.
”Rizzoli, we need to talk.” Lt Cavanaugh practically pushed his way in past Jane before she could actually invite him.
”We may have a problem unless you have a damn good reason for this that you can explain.”
Cavanaugh extended a piece of paper to her and Jane gasped.
”I have never seen it before. It looks like it is from the credit union we all use.”
”Read this, Jane. Explain it to me, for God’s sake.”
Jane’s knuckles began to turn white and shake. Her lips and throat were fried dry. The statement listed Jane’s bank account and a deposit for 350,000 dollars making her balance $357,809.
Jane gasped and blurted before she could even think, ”This isn’t my money!”
He handed her the envelope with Rizzoli scrawled on it and Jane recognized it was the one Frost had given her at the engagement party? She had stuffed it in the back pocket of the jeans that got photographed and confiscated from the hamper the night before. She hadn’t even bothered to open it.
What did this mean? When did her whole life fall to shit?

    Comments

    1. wow! It was a very interesting chapter.
I understand that Maura wants to protect Jane, and therefore she is left, but it seems like she was about to be she will not be back for a while.
I hope Maura’s plan comes in and there will be no gap between them.
I look forward to the next chapter.

      • Let me attempt to make it make sense. Maura is afraid for Jane and the squad and with all the evidence missing she highly suspects the mob. EVERYONE DOES. But Jane would never let them ask her to go under cover and wear a wire to catch Paddy. Maura leaves just intending to ask questions and is told for the first time (hard to believe) Paddy is not behind the bodies and evidence. More mortifying, was when he offered to help her solve the crime and treated her like a guest in his home.
