After Love – (Chapter: Chapter 8 – Aftershock)

    Ashley’s POV

My ears began to ring. I hadn’t intended on hanging up the phone; that happened automatically when it hit the pavement. It hit the pavement, and then just shut. My ears rang. I felt like I was standing in a room with a million people having a million different conversations. Murmuring filled my mind. My thoughts made absolutely no sense. Many would think that I would freak out, that thoughts about Spencer would come rushing at me from every direction, but that just didn’t really happen. Instead my mind went numb with noise.

“Shit!” I yelled as I dropped the cigarette from my hand. I had forgotten about it. I looked at the place on my hand. There was a burn between my fingers where the cigarette had burned its way down to my flesh. When I looked down for the cigarette, I saw the phone again. Still shut.

I reached down to pick it up, but instead I grabbed the cigarette butt and walked over to the nearest smoker’s outpost—a fancy name for a giant ashtray. I sat down on the sidewalk, with the phone sitting between my legs, and I pulled out another cigarette. The nicotine would make the noise stop. It had to. There had to be some purpose for smoking, and since I had yet to find it, this must be it.

I was partially right because as the smoke filled my lungs, I felt better—a little better. The noise began to die as I watched the phone. I wondered if it would ring again. I wondered if she would call back. She had known it was me, so she probably wouldn’t. She’d probably wait for Glen to call her. Or worse. She wouldn’t answer then either.

My brain wasn’t working. I forgot about my cigarette and cursed again as it fell to the ground. Once again, I rubbed the burned place on my skin. Now I had a mark on both hands. Joy.

As I stared at the phone, I tried to figure out if I wanted it to ring. I began another cigarette.
