Chapter 2.6 (Part 2) – The Morning After – Ashley’s POV
*************************Flashback*************************
I leave Spencer to order the food while I walk into the bathroom. I quickly relieve myself and move to the sinks to begin washing my hands. I look up at a familiar voice…Madison.
“Dyke, I saw your new toy waiting for you.”
I take a deep breath avoiding a fight because I know it will piss off Spencer (as much as she hates Madison) if I get us kicked out of an IHOP. I dry my hands and start to walk out when I hear her say something that stops my heart in my chest.
“I wonder what Spencer’s mother would think if she knew her daughter was screwing a dyke.”
I turn around my surprise must show on my face because she presses her advantage.
“You heard me. If I see so much as a peck on the cheek between you two at school. I’m calling Paula Carlin.”
“What, you can’t deal with us so your running to Spencer’s mom…how pathetic is — ”
“Save it,” she cuts me off, “someone has to save the student body from having to watch you to make out in the quad everyday.”
I can’t believe this.
“So, do you think Spencer’s mom will let her stay in the house after she finds out, or will she be living back in Ohio?”
What!
“Yeah, I heard Glen talking…if Paula finds out anything is going on between you two she’s going to send Spencer to Ohio to live with her Grandparents…so I’d keep it low key at school…unless you want Paula to find out.”
Madison leaves. I stand there attempting to regain my composure. I can’t let Spencer find out about this. She’ll freak out.
************************************************************************
We pull into the school parking lot. Spencer looks so nervous…I just want to grab her and kiss her until she forgets where she is. I see Madison out of the corner of my eye. She leaning against the lockers grinning at me. Spencer says something and I respond on autopilot reassuring her as soon as I can. I get away from her as fast as I can as soon as we are out of the car. My classes pass by too fast and soon it is lunch. I meet Spencer in front of my car she looks near tears. I ask her if she’s okay, and I get response that I really do deserve. I spend most of lunch standing right in the same spot.
*************************End Flashback*************************
The bell rings and I make my way to Chemistry (one of two classes that I have with Spencer). I’m one of the first people there. My teacher looks at me like I’ve grown another head. I’m usually the last one to show up (if I bother to show up at all). I take my seat at one of the lab tables and wait for Spencer who (since she is new and I rarely show up) is my lab partner. I quickly write out a note explaining my actions. She sits down next to me without a word. Her eyes are red and swollen. I pass her the note and she glares at me.
“Spencer,” I plead, “please just read it.”
She rolls her eyes trying and failing to be flippant. She reads it quickly and almost looks relieved. She writes a response and passes me the note.
*************************The Note*************************
‘Why didn’t you tell me?’
‘I didn’t want to scare you.’
‘What, so you acted like you were just blowing me off?’
‘I was just trying to protect you, and I realize that I was wrong. I’m so sorry.’
‘So you weren’t?’
‘Weren’t what?’
‘Just blowing me off?’
‘No! Spencer, I love you. I never want to hurt you. Please believe me.’
*************************End Note*************************
I look over at her. I’m close to tears myself now. Our eyes meet and she doesn’t look away. She must see something there because she smiles at me.
“I believe you.”
