Better Than Running at Night – (Chapter: 5)

    Chapter 5

It was cold. Ashley didn’t know whether it was the air in the room she was sitting in, or if it was just her but it was cold and she was shivering madly. Asleep in the chair next to here was an exhausted Spencer and at the mere sight of her Ashley’s body began to calm down. She couldn’t help but reach out and stroke the blonde’s beautiful hair.

Spencer’s eyes’s shot open at the touch and she immediately jerked back, and out of the plastic chair. Ashley tried to hide the hurt in her face. The blonde ran a shaking hand through her hair and looked down at her feet.

"Do you want coffee…or something?" Spencer asked, and Ashley, with a shock, realized just how tired she really was.

    "Coffee sounds great…"

"even the shit they serve here?’ Spencer chuckled. Ashley chuckled to, not because it was particularly funny, but becayse she really needed to laugh.

This hospital seemed to suck all the energy from her and replace it with sorrow. Even Spencer’s smile seemed to shine less in this dismal place. Ashley watched Spencer walk over to the coffee vending machine and couldn’t help but be grateful that the blonde had stayed with her.

The fire had nearly engulfed the house by the time Ashley had gotten there and they were slowly loading someone into an ambulance. The figure was small and Ashley had known immedietely that it was Lance, her only child, and at this point in her life the only thing worth living for.

Ashley sighed in exasperation and placed her heavy head in her sweaty hands, her body had gone back to its previous motions. The shiver running up and down her spine, the brunette couldn’t even begin to imagine life without her son.

In a way Lance was the only thing left of Aiden worth remembering. It was as if Aiden had left the good part of him in Lance and Ashley couldn’t help but look at Lance and see Aiden the way he used to be. Before she got pregnant.

Ashley was so wrapped up in her musings that she hadn’t noticed Spencer’s return, or the steaming coffee the blonde was holding out to her.
