Cheer Me Up Thank You – (Chapter: 1)

"I just can’t do this anymore Ashley."

It didn’t come as a shock to me. Perhaps it should have. If it had come as a shock, maybe I would have felt hurt or sad about the whole thing. Instead all I felt was guilt, because who am I kidding? I knew this relationship was dead a long time ago.

I watched it deteriorate in front of my eyes and I did nothing. I did absolutely nothing to fix it, to try and make things right.

"I know you can’t," I breathed out, almost inaudibly. I didn’t really have to elaborate on it. Neither did he. Everything had been predetermined in the silence that had invaded our marriage for the past year or so.

Now all we had to do was leave each other. That was the only thing left to be done.

"I’m going to be staying at Glen’s for the next few days if you need to contact me. His sister has agreed to sort through all the legal details for us."

I nod because I can’t do anything else. I can’t yell or cry or do anything but nod my fucking head. So I keep nodding as he walks to the door and picks up a small, neat suitcase. We’re almost done.

    "Goodbye Ashley."

    "Goodbye Aiden."

He mutters a ‘sorry’ as he walks out the door, closing it quietly behind him.

    "I’m sorry too."

"Spencer you’re needed in Gail’s office asap!"

Trent is standing impatiently at my door, waiting for some sign of acknowledgment. I give him a reassuring smile before looking away. Gail can wait for two more minutes, it surely wouldn’t kill him. Not that I’d mind.

"So how is Aiden holding up?" I say as I return my concentration to my brother’s phone call.

"He’s getting there. It’s weird. I can tell he’s upset about the break-up but it’s like he came to terms with it a long time ago, and he’s just waiting to get it all over with."
