Circles and Circles – (Chapter: I’ve been here before, i’ve seen this room, i’ve walked this floor (chap 10))

Spencer could have died with frustration. Her whole body was on fire and Ashley was standing up, taking a step back, walking away.

Spencer opened her mouth to say something, anything

Jesus Christ come back here and kiss me’ her head screamed. Until she heard the voices of the others traipsing up the path, nearly at the top. ‘Her hearing must be fantastic’, she thought.

Riley was the first to round the corner to the little rock plateau where Spencer and Ashley now were, a few feet apart. She took in Spencer’s knee, with the trouser leg pushed up, and looked concerned.

“Are you ok?”, she said, ambling over.

“Yeah” Spencer said, moving her knee gently. To her relief the pain had mostly subsided. “I just wrenched it a little.”

The others soon made it to the top and after everyone was satisfied that Spencer really was ok, they settled about, exclaiming over the view and generally chuckling and carrying on. Spencer couldn’t help but repeatedly glance at Ashley, but somehow she had become a black hole where Ashley Davies was concerned. It was almost like she wasn’t there.

They sat around for half an hour and Spencer tried walking, finding it acceptable, if a little painful. As they picked themselves up and got ready to walk down the hill, Spencer was surprised to find Ashley at her elbow.

“I’ll come down with you. You could hurt yourself if you go alone.”

Spencer stared at her and then just nodded, unwilling to argue. They made their way back down the steep path to the lake, Ashley helping her down the larger jumps and Riley helping out where she could. They made it to the bottom, this time as a group, and as Spencer’s knee was aching (more than she’d admit to), they headed on back to the lodge.

Once there, Spencer found herself summarily bundled on to an armchair by the fire, knee up on an ottoman, and being fussed over by nearly everyone. Everyone except Ashley, who was standing back, leaning against a wall, her eyes intently watching Spencer. As the others rummaged around arguing over cold packs vs. hot packs, about having the knee up, or bent, and about various other things Spencer’s eyes found Ashleys. She stared at her, as though almost in a trance. As though she could somehow fathom what the brunette was thinking if she could just sink into those beautiful eyes. Spencer snapped out of it.
