The day went on much as it had begun. When my parents came back, they stayed around for an hour or two before heading over to Glen’s. My mother didn’t speak a word to Ashley, which I guess was an improvement from her earlier insult, and Ashley and I watched some t.v. until we fell asleep.
When we awoke the next day, I received a lovely early-morning, final examination from the doctor, who ok-ed my release. He gave me copies of my CAT scans and told me to take it easy for the next few days. Luckily, the nurse also came in with my recovered belongings from the flight, which included basically everything that I had come onto the plane with; even my credit card and driver’s license were still in my wallet. I got changed out of the hospital gown, much to Ashley’s dismay, and was wheeled outside to wait for Ashley to come with the car. And I was really looking forward to seeing Ashley drive a crappy rental car, as opposed to what she always drives otherwise. But unfortunately, I wasn’t going to get that chance.
“You did not rent a Mercedes convertible, Ashley!” I yelled in disbelief as she pulled up. She grinned as she got out of the car to help me in.
“What? They didn’t have anything else at the rental place.”
“You’re telling me all they had was a new Mercedes?”
“Yes!” she insisted. “Well, this and a few other pieces of crap. I am not driving a fucking Daewoo!”
“You’re such a snob,” I laughed. I thanked the nurse after I was successfully sitting in the passenger seat and took one last look at the hospital as Ashley drove off.
“Happy to be out?” she asked. I nodded and grinned at her.
“Thanks for driving me back.”
“My pleasure. So how do we get to Glen’s?”
“Oh… turn right up here. And if you follow that road for awhile, it’ll take you to the next county.”
“Still know your way around?”
“Yeah. 16 years is a long time to live somewhere.”
“I thought you lived 40 minutes from here?” she asked.
“I did, but this is on the way to Cincinnati. It’s almost as familiar to me,” I explained. “So do you have any idea as to how to get back to New York from here?”
