dark blue – (Chapter: sore thumb (part II))

Paula drove. She pushed hard on the gas, going the only place she could. See, Paula is a woman who appreciates order. She thrives on the classic aspects of life and honors tradition. Until a week ago, her life was in balance, not perfect balance but still, it didn’t teeter too much. Now she struggled to keep the old scale from breaking, needless to say she was fighting a losing battle. But still, she had the hospital. The hospital. The place where order was a requisite, where everything was exact, precise. Everyone had a similar noble goal and they were all trying to reach it. As she pulled into the crowded parking lot and parked her car, she leaned forward and rested her head on the steering wheel. Hot tears fueled by anger began to well up in her eyes. Her mind unintentionally wandered. There you go, Spencer! She lifted her daughter up, twirling her around in arms full circle before grounding her in a tuffet of grass. Spencer picked a flower and tucked it behind her hair as she smiled up at her mother. Shh, it’s okay. it’s okay Now she was comforting her preteen who had just broken up with her first boyfriend. Spencer had buried her head in her mothers chest. She was crying uncontrollably. She was experiencing heart break. Spencer liked him. She liked him a lot. The way her eyes lit up when she saw him. The way they held hands when they didn’t think anyone was watching, even thouhg someone always was. She’s not…She’s not gay. She can’t be. She just can’t. And just like that, she managed to convincer herself of her daughters heterosexuality. She wouldn’t give up hope, she refused to. Paula stepped out of the vehicle, listening for the beep of the automatic lock. Her daughter was confused and it was her mission, her responsibility as a mother, to make her see the light. If she didn’t know her daughter than who did?

"Pot!? There was pot here last night!?" Clay exclaimed to whoever might’ve been listening. He swept the stuff into his half full trash bag, muttering to himself as he moved out of the kitchen and into the family room. No one had said much of anything since the Paula episode. Instead they entertained themselves with clearing empty crushed cans of beer and half full handles of alcohol. Chelsea was vacumming the living room, Aiden was taking down the half dozen strobe lights, Ashley was attacking a piece of gum that had engrained itself in the woodwork, and Spencer was picking up the random articles of clothing that were strewn around their previously humble abode. "Jesus fucking christ! Are you serious!?" Everyone looked up and turned toward the blonde. There was no question, Spencer was ticked. The rest of them had opted to wear sullen, wary faces after the paula shit. But Spencer, she looked livid. Aiden shot a glance at Clay, who threw his arms up and gestured towards Chelsea, who cocked an eyebrow and sent it right back to Ashley. The brunette cautiously made her way across the rubble and into the other room. "Spence…Are you okay?" "Am I okay? There’s a fucking thong in my parents chandelier. Yeah, I’m great." Ashley rubbed her hands together not quite sure where to go from here. "I’m sorry…" Spencer whispered, turning towards Ashley. Ashley looked up to meet her gaze, shocked to see what she found there. "I wasn’t going to let her touch you. I wasn’t going to let her hurt you, Ash." By now she had raised her hand to softly meet Ashley’s cheek. Ashley wrapped her arms around her waist, pulling her close. She could tell Spencer wasn’t kidding. As a matter of fact, she didn’t really want to think about what might have transpired had Aiden and Clay not been there. "I know. I love you, Spencer" They kissed a long and languid one. "I love you too."
