    Flipside – (Chapter: Backstage Pass)

“Spence, if I don’t get a reply from you then I know it was just a mean joke.”

Yep that’s it.  That’s all she said.  She put all of her faith that I was awake in one simple line.  I check out the date.  Oh nice.  A month ago.  I flop the letter back down on the stack.   So what do you think?  Should I read them?  Like I have to ask.

So, here I am sitting on my bed reading what seems like the endless supply of letters that Ashley had sent over the years.  There were birthday cards, postcards, pamphlets from her shows and just stories about where she had been and where she was going.  At the end of each letter she always stated that she missed me.  But then there was one letter.  It was dated about a year after my accident.  This letter started out the same, telling me a story that she had her first big show in a couple nights and that she was nervous, hoping I was there to help her through it.  And then a line stuck out at me.  “There will always be a ticket waiting for you and at every show I’ll look for you.  That, at least, I can promise you.”

Glen knocked on my door and I told him to come in.

“What are you doing?”  He looked at me and my face was in confusion.  Is it true then?  Was there always a ticket waiting for me?  Could she have really made it that easy for me?  I was knocked out of my thoughts when Glen asked the question again.

“Did you know about these at all?”  I look at him and point to the scattered letters all over my bed.

“Spence, no way.  She’s not that much of a bitch.”  He said looking at one of the letters and putting it down.

“You want to bet?”  I challenge him.  “I found these in mom’s closet hidden in a box.  And to make things worse,” I take the latest letter that Ashley had sent me and handed it to him.  He read it and his face was apologetic.
