    Substitute Teacher

    “So…?”

    “So…” Ben repeated as we took a seat on a park bench with our coffee.

    “How was your night?”

    “Great,” he replied.

    “Did you guys…” I began and trailed off. He gave me a look and a smile, and I took that as a yes. “So do you like her?”

    “Yeah. I like her a lot,” he said. “She’s smart… funny… hot… and she knows her stuff when it comes to music.”

    “When are you guys going out again?”

    “Tonight I think.”

    “Isn’t it weird that the people we’re going out with are roommates and really good friends?”

    “Yeah,” he laughed. He took his cigarettes out of his pocket and lit one.

    “God you’re just doing this purposely, aren’t you,” I told him, feeling the familiar nicotine craving coursing through my body. I took another sip of my coffee to try to harbor the pressure but it didn’t work. He offered one to me and, though it took all the willpower I had, I declined.

    “So I know you had a good night last night,” he teased.

    “Why would you say that?” I said with a smirk.

    “I don’t know, maybe because you and Spencer were all over each other the entire night… and then you disappeared into the bathroom for, like, 20 minutes.”

    “It was not 20 minutes!”

    “It was definitely awhile.”

    “I guess,” I replied, grinning. “But yeah I had a good night. And then this morning, before she left for class, guess what she did?”

    “Um… do I want to know?”

    “She made me breakfast in bed. Like a real breakfast… eggs and everything. Nobody’s ever done that for me before.”

    “You really love her, don’t you?”

    “Yeah, I do.” What an understatement that was.

    “What does her family think about all this?”

    “Well, her parents are divorced. Her dad is awesome; he’s pretty much like the father I never had… such a nice guy. And her brothers are cool. But her mom…” I trailed off, feeling bad for talking negatively about her mom.

    “You don’t like her?”

    “She’s pretty religious… she never really accepted Spencer once she came out to her. And I don’t know what she hates more: the fact that Spencer really is gay, or the fact that I’m still here after all this time. And I know she hates me,” I explained. “But… well… don’t tell Spencer I’m telling you this… her mom has cancer.”

    1. I just LOVE your story Koz. I think that they are wonderful chapters and I am so glad that Spencer and Ashley are doing okay now. I just hope that her mom gets better and that everyone at school, doesn’t start to be Spencer friends so that they can see Ashley in person. Take care Koz and I can’t wait to read the next chapter.
