    Growing Up – (Chapter: Longing)

“And don’t come back till you do!”  I hear her yell to the closed door.

I make the short twenty minute commute to her house in an hour due to wonderful LA traffic.  I park in the street and take a deep breath trying to figure out what I am going to say.  I walk up to her house and into the side door.  I had stopped knocking a long time ago.  Mr. Carlin had made it clear that I was welcome anytime and once Paula moved out, I was comfortable enough to actually feel welcome.  All of the Carlin men are still at the table, having just finished their dinner.

“Hey, Ash!”  Clay greets me when he sees me walk in.

“Oh hey, Ash.  I thought you were at school already?”  Glen’s sincerity surprises me.

“Yeah, I was, I just thought how stupid I was for not spending these last few hours with Spencer.”

“Well she just went up to her room.  Do you want any dinner?”  Mr. C asks, knowing I am not usually the one to turn down a home-cooked meal, but I have more important things to do tonight.

“No thanks I just ate.  I’m gonna be upstairs.”

I exit the kitchen and head for the stairs.  I see her suitcases by the door and my blood pressure skyrockets.  I begin to reconsider.  If I see her again, I might not be able to let her go.  It had not sunk in before, but seeing her bags makes the situation a little more real.  The stairs seem like Mt. Everest as I begin climbing.  My legs become heavier and heavier with each step and my breathing a little more ragged.  When I reach the top, you would think I weighed six hundred pounds and was completely incapable of physical exertion.  I take a couple minutes to compose myself before heading to her room and knock softly before entering.

“Ashley!”  She is sitting on her bed, but jumps straight up when she sees me come into the room.  “What are you doing here?”

“I wasn’t going to let you off the hook that easily.  I figured I could get in a couple more hours of harassing you, while we are still in the same state.”

    7. you’re good. being able to rile everyone up like this. lol. anyways, you had me going there for a minute, with the whole “i’ve got to tell her how i feel!” moment. I was like oh man, here comes the melodrama. Those cliche moments only come second to last min..or rather, last second airport chases, catching the love of their lives with one foot in the departure gate and then spouting their undying, all encompassing, i love you even when never refill the toilet paper and never wash the dishes kind of love. but whew. you recovered in the believability section when spence was like uh nope, still leaving, and that kiss was a mistake. hah. anyways, still loved it. enough babbling. bring on the next post!
