I have come to win your folks – (Chapter: Four)

    Chapter Four

The Carlins made plans to leave that weekend. Clay and Glen were surprised by the sudden vacation preparations. The boys did not want to leave. A week with their very austere grandparents wasn’t their idea of fun. Paula told them, a little sharper than usual, that this was a family time together and she did not want anyone bailing out for any reason.

“Take your assignments with you, if you want.” She told her children.

“Yeah, we might as well. It’s not as if we’ll have anything to do out there.” Glen groaned.

The flight to Chicago and then to Dayton and finally to Springfield had been a stroke of luck. They just managed to find five seats that were not reserved. The Carlins arrived in Springfield past 10 in the evening.

Ol’ Pa Smith, a tall man with the stature of a soldier and the looks of a veteran Hollywood actor, came to receive them. Paula was his only child and her children was his only family. His white hair shone in the evening lights as he kissed and hugged the Carlins before settling them all in his van.

Ashley showed the finger to the driver. The woman beside him screwed her face in disgust and beckoned him to ignore and drive away.

“Assholes! Can’t even watch where they are going.” Ashley violently swerved to the right and zipped the car in full speed. There was no music today. She was having a terrible headache, courtesy doses of sleeping pills.

After that day’s fight with Spencer, Ashley had shut herself in her room. She had been hurt and disappointed and she did not want to feel all this. She tried to ease her pain by drinking and sleeping. Unfortunately the ache didn’t allow her to drift off to sleep. So she resorted to the sleeping pills in her mother’s cabinet. She had spent her days watching music videos and playing her drums. Mrs. Davies had once come around to Ashley’s room to complain about the noise. But Ashley was too absorbed in her music to even notice or care what her mother was saying. Eventually, she had to apologize to her boyfriend and settled for a hotel room instead.
