Spencer was tossing a salad in a large bowl for her and Ashley’s dinner. Ashley was sitting at the kitchen table, her guitar leaning against the table leg next to her. The brunette was leaning over sheets of staffs, which were slowly being filled with Ashley’s musical genius. Spencer looked up from her task to glance at her girlfriend, seeing if she was at all ready to eat. Suddenly Spencer found herself just staring at Ashley’s intense focus on her music. The blonde inexplicably realized that Ashley was not just part of her life, but a consideration in every aspect of it.

“Ash,” Spencer said quietly but with enough energy that the brunette would hear her through her concentration. Ashley continued vigorously writing while her free hand held up a single finger. The blonde waited, just gazing at her girlfriend as Ashley completed the line, satisfied enough with it for now. Ashley finally put her pencil down and looked up at the tall girl behind the counter.

“Sorry, I just wanted to finish that thought before I lost the words.” Ashley almost smiled, but became silent as she tried to decode Spencer’s expression.

“Ash,” Spencer said again, not looking away from the other girl. Ashley blinked and bowed her head a little, wondering what was going through Spencer’s head.

“What’s wrong?” Ashley asked, her brow furrowing a little. Spencer shook her head almost imperceptibly.

“I love you.” Spencer said, not with a particular emphasis on any word, but with continual weight through the whole phrase. Ashley’s eyes brightened and her brow became smooth again. She felt her lungs filling with air as a smile started at the edge of her lips.

“I love you, too.” Ashley said. She had, for a split second, imagined herself getting up and holding Spencer in her arms, but a realization dawned on Ashley, immobilizing her. In that moment, when Spencer told Ashley that she loved her with no pretense or specific reason to do so, Ashley understood that love was so much more than anything else; fucking someone was different than making love to someone; caring about someone and giving them what you want to give them was different than caring about someone and giving them what they need. Ashley quickly memorized the moment that she and her beautiful girlfriend just shared. Then Ashley rose from her seat, walked over to Spencer and wrapped her arms about her waist. The taller girl put her hands on Ashley’s face. They did not move from this spot. They occupied themselves by simply staring into each other’s eyes, unspoken words being shouted at full volume. Then, as if given a cue, both leaned into each other, gently letting their lips touch.
