Just another day in the life – (Chapter: 1-8)

    Chapter 1

With the click of the door and the sounds of a faint dying doorbell, I walked into the vacant café.  A woman behind the counter looks up at the younger blonde girl and yells, “your late, hurry up and get to the register, we have been so busy. Cant you tell, look at all these people” with a stern look on her face. “Im sorry, I had homework, my mom wouldn’t give me a ride until I finished at least one subject”, replying shyly.

The woman responded with a smile.  “You know I’m only joking around with you sweetie, it’s just something I like to do to the newbies, a bit of a hazing ritual.  Your mom is right, having a job should always come second to school work”.  I cocked my head to the side giggling at the woman, “Has it really been busy?” I asked looking at the completely vacant shop.  “Well lets see, since the lunch rush, I have played 3 hands of solitaire, finished my grocery shopping online, and ordered new aprons for us, Im thinking that we should change the color, maybe royal blue”.

Spencer just looked on, as though her boss was telling her about life’s big secrets, she was in total awe of this woman.  She owned her own coffee café, that doubles as a club at night.  Spencer never got to go into the bar, with only being 17 she didn’t want to get her boss in trouble, and she was just grateful to be given this job.  It wasn’t anything special, just working behind the counter, but it was great she thought she was making her own money and learning about the business world.  Spencer was hoping that when she turned 18 she would be allowed to work in the club once in a while, where there was live music and entertainment almost every night of the week.

“Hey”, “Hey”, “SPENCER, anyone home”, “You ok? You look like you’re in a different world”.  “If you would, there are some flyers that need to get posted on the entertainment board on the back wall”.  “Sure”, I jumped up running to grab the flyers. “Spence, can you take down the old posters while your there, that bulletin board is just getting over run, I should just turn that whole wall into one big bulletin board”.  While I was reviewing the board a couple of girl walked in knocking me to the floor with the door. A young woman immediately began “Oh, excuse me, I am so sorry. Im looking for Jill is she around?” while offering me a hand up.  “Oh yah, it’s ok, I should have been paying attention, um Jill she is in back I think.  Give me a second I will go get her for you.  Can I tell her who’s looking for her?”  “Of course, tell her Jamie is here, I have a 5 o’clock interview for the bartender position”.  I gladly went running into the back room, looking for Jill.
