Just Like Me – (Chapter: Chapter 1 Hospit)

Hospit.  What kind of name for a town is that?  Ho Spit is what I called it.  For all I’ve seen of this place that’s all its worth, ho spit.   Nothing.  I guess this would be a nice place to live if only there was something else around here besides dirt, pigs, and hicks.  I was hoping to get away from the rural area I lived in back home.  This wasn’t what I had in mind when Ben said we’d be moving to New York.  When I think New York, first that comes to mind is: “The City That Never Sleeps!  Bright lights!  Show Biz!”  All I get is Homer the Hog from Hospit.

When my dad died I didn’t think much of it, I barely knew the guy.  That was when I was 6.  When my mom died I got sick.  I was bed ridden for a week after we got that phone call from the hospital, I couldn’t do anything. She had been in a car accident on her way home from work.  Hit by some kid who shouldn’t have passed Driver’s Ed, killed instantly.  That was last year.  I was a sophomore at King High School in North Carolina.  I never said goodbye, I didn’t go to her funeral but that doesn’t mean I didn’t love her.  She left me with her husband, my step-father, Ben Montanio.  He’s not so bad but he is always trying so hard to be the ‘perfect dad’.

We had been trying to get along with our normal lives but it’s been hard.  Ben suddenly decided we couldn’t take care of ourselves.  Don’t ask me why.  He told me a couple weeks ago that we would be moving up north to live with his parents.

That’s how I ended up here, riding in Ben’s silver Highlander up a very long dirt road blasting his favorite Earth, Wind & Fire CD.  I have to admit, it is beautiful around here.  This road was shaded by so many trees I couldn’t see much of the sky but there are some spaces between them where it lets the sunlight in.  I haven’t seen a sign of human inhabitants for at least a few miles.  I looked up a few minutes later when we made a sharp right turn.  I could see about ten houses lining both sides of the single lane street and a few more off in the distance.

    1. I’m liking the beginning of the story. Cool that you had Ben Montanio make a reappearance. I’m from North Carolina, Greenville to be exact, so this story definitely caught my attention instantly. Keep posting and I’ll keep reading.
