Lasting Impressions – (Chapter: One- Grown Apart)

Obviously enjoying the praise, a thing the woman wasn’t quite used to yet, she gave a nod and small smile, “Yes, the food at the shelter isn’t half bad once you get used to it…” And the conversation went on like this for the next hour, slipping in and out of deep and meaningful conversation to little tidbits about where she was sleeping or how clean the showers were. Spencer often found that Carol needed these little breathers or else she became overwhelmed with emotion. You couldn’t blame her; her husband had abused the woman for about 7 years before someone finally called the cops after finding her passed out and bleeding on the lawn.

As the session came to an end, Spencer rose from her chair, enveloping the woman in a hug before giving a smile and a wave good bye, “I will see you on Wednesday then?” She inquired, pulling away as she slightly arched a brow expectantly. “Oh yes, of course.” The woman replied before turning and walking out the door, letting it shut softly behind her. Turning away from it Spencer heaved a sigh, relieved to have the day over and done with. Finding her phone, which had been set to silent for obvious reasons, she found the screen blinking a little message that informed her she had one voicemail.

Flipping open the phone she pressed and held the number one digit until it speed dialed her voice mail, prompting her for her password, 2697, before letting her check the message.

“Hey babe, it’s me. Just calling to make sure your still coming over for dinner tonight. Remember, you owe me big for putting up with your mother last week, so you better be on your best behavior. Love you, bye.”

A soft chuckle passed over Spencer’s lips as she listened to the feminine voice on her machine. Lily was right, she did owe her, and big. Her mother had given her the inquisition last week when Spencer had made the mistake of inviting her over for dinner. You’d think she’d have learned by now that introducing your girl friends to mom generally lead to disaster, but she was far too stubborn to try and hide her relationships any more. After 11 years, Paula really should be over it by now.
