Like A Million Parachutes – (Chapter: Two)

    Ding Dong.

I shake from my sleep and rub my eyes.

    Ding Dong.

I get out of bed, dressed in….well…not much, but that’s okay, it’s just Spencer surely.  I slowly stumble to the door and look through the peep hole.  Yeah.  It’s her.  I unlock the door and slowly open it.

“Hey Ash.  I’m sorry if I woke you up.  Want me to let you get back to bed?”

    “No…no.  Please stay.”

I open the door wide to let her in.  I sit on my couch and pat a spot next to me for her to sit.

“So how’s life?  Tell me everything.”

“It’s been okay.  I’m bored with Ohio so I bury myself in my schoolwork.  The “gay” lifestyle isn’t very accepted at my school so I don’t have much of a social life.”

    “Gosh.  I’m sorry.”

“Gosh?  You’re such a nerd.  Some things never change.”

    “I guess not…”

“It’s weird being here with you.”

    “I know.  I don’t know if I like it.”

    “Want me to leave?”

“No, no, no.  I mean having you here, but I have a girlfriend.  It just sucks.”

“Why do you stay with her?”

“Like I’ve said, she needs me.  We’ve been together for two years and we’ve never broken up.  It just works.”

    “But are you happy?”

    “I don’t know.”

    “That sucks.”

    “I know.”

We were silent for a while.  We both had to have been thinking the same thing.  We were so happy together but Spencer  wanted to go to Ohio so I respected her decision.  I wish I’d just waited but nothing was for sure then, and hind sight is 20/20.  I looked around my apartment.  She helped me pick it out.  She helped me decorate it too the summer before she left.

“Your apartment hasn’t changed much since I was last here.”

“Yeah, I like the way we decorated it so I kept it the same.”

“Remember when we painted the whole living room?”

    I laughed.

“It took me 3 hours to get that paint out of my hair.”

“Hey!  You looked like you needed  some highlights!”

“I already had red and blonde!”

    “So why not add khaki?”

“It made for a nice shower though.”

“I think we used a whole bottle of shampoo to get that stuff out.”
