    Lost myself

I pull the last photo from my bedroom wall, careful not to pull off the wall paper with it, and it finally dawns on me that the best summer of my life is coming to an end.  I stare at the picture in my hand and smile as I remember the moment the camera had captured.  I feel nostalgic, and wish I could repeat the last seven or so months of my life, but I know that wishing gets me nowhere.  In a few days I’ll be leaving for college, and I’ll be leaving Ashley behind.

Tears fill my eyes as I glimpse how we had been that day all those months ago, eating ice cream on the beach; a moment immortalized by film.  Clay had taken it the only time we had not noticed him turn the lens in our direction, and it captured one of the most blissful moments I could remember, before I realized that our time together would come to an end as soon as I opened my acceptance letters from colleges located all over the country.  I am moving to the other side of America, and it may as well be the other side of the world.  Ashley’s face smiles in the photograph, set in front of a beautiful sunset, her eyes trained on me as I try to wipe ice cream from my chin.  I remember how, just after the flash had gone off in the evening light, Ash had leaned towards me and kissed the melted cream from my skin.  Who is going to do that for me at university?  Who is going to know exactly how I’m feeling without having to ask?  And who is going to tell me everything is going to be okay, and will make me believe them so whole heartedly?  No one, that’s who.

I place the photo down on the top of a large pile that is ready to be packed into yet another box.  This is what my entire life in LA has amounted to – a pile of boxes in a near-empty room, all waiting to be loaded into the back of a car to be unpacked somewhere else, somewhere I’m supposed to be making my new home.  But nowhere is home without Ashley.

    1. ::sniffle:: You made Jesus cry. With happyish/bittersweet tears. Long distance relationships suck, but if you really love someone they’re definitely worth trying. Reminds me of my first girlfriend. ::sniff:: Wow, I’m usually a total ass when I comment on your fics, but I’m not feeling it now. That was really sweet and true and wonderful. You know I LOOOOOVE your fics, but I seriously think this is the most honest and moving piece you’ve written so far.

    3. Ack! I loved it, too, and ALSO want it continued, but you really need to finish spin, first to break, and away from home first! >:( Speaking of Spin, where the hell did it go? No updates in a dog’s age.
