    My Best Friend’s Girlfriend

Melody and Ashley saw Spencer sitting by herself in the quad. “Hon, just talk to her,” Ashley began. “It’ll make you feel better. I’m sure it’ll help her feel better, too.”

“She doesn’t even want us to help her out with whatever she’s going through,” responded Melody simply. “Why should I talk to her to begin with? She has ignored us for weeks now, Ashley.”

“I know that she doesn’t wants us to, but we still have to try,” Ashley sighed. “It sounded more like a cry for help when we found her by herself in the swings. For the record, you should talk to her since she needs you more than me. She’s your best friend.”

“I guess,” agreed Melody with a sigh. “I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

“I’ll even go with you to talk to her,” Ashley said. “There’s strength in numbers. We could help get Spencer out of her shell, to open up to us.” Ashley held out her hand for Melody to take. A smile formed on Melody’s lips and she took Ashley’s hand.

“What would I do without you?” asked Melody with curiosity. Ashley shrugged and Melody playfully hit her on Ashley’s shoulder. They went towards Spencer who was reading a book. Melody tapped Spencer on her shoulder. Spencer gave Ashley and Melody a questioning look and put down her book.

“Hey Spence,” began Melody. “Long time no talk.”

“I was just leaving, Mel,” Spencer sighed. “Whatever you have to say, I’m not ready to hear it.”

“Can’t we talk?” asked Melody with concern. “Look, I don’t know why you’re being the way you are, but it doesn’t only to have to do with a blast from your past coming out of the blue.”

“Yes, it does,” Spencer retorted. “With that settled, I have to get going. I have to meet a teacher to talk about a grade for my paper.” Spencer was about to leave, but Ashley prevented Spencer from going any further.

“You’re not going anywhere until you’re telling us what’s wrong,” said Ashley.

“What the hell is this?” Spencer asked angrily. “Some sort of intervention?”

“No, it’s not an intervention,” pointed out Melody. “Just talk to us. Ash and I only want to help you out with whatever you’re going through so you don’t have to face it alone. Is that so hard to believe?” Spencer sighed in exasperation. “There’s more running in your mind then you’re letting on, Spence. If you can’t tell your best friend, who can you tell?”
