    Who’s uniform is that?

    Spencer sat still as a mouse on the surface of her bed. Her new room smelled musty and her window was covered with spots all over the glass. Her home was not a home. She kept her cell phone in front of her, constantly looking at the time. She knew that she belonged to Ashley until midnight. It was 11:45 and there was no possible way she could make it to Ashley and back to her prison cell in fifteen minutes. She wished for Ashley to call her at least. Just to say goodnight and tell her everything was going to work out. Why wasn’t Ashley calling?

     

    Spencer sat alone in her cold room. Ben hadn’t turned down the air conditioner like she had asked. Another 15 minutes and the time itself burned into her tired heart. She sat silently. It wasn’t too late for Ashley to call. Ashley would call.

     

    “What’s wrong Spencer?” Her mother asked from the doorway.

     

    “Ashley hasn’t called. She always calls when we’re apart. I just don’t get it.” Spencer said.

     

    Paula stepped inside the room and sat on the bed in front of Spencer. “Sweetie, did you ever think Ashley was not as close as she appeared to be?” Paula’s lies grew intense and the sound was enough to shatter glass.

     

    Spencer wanted nothing more than to label her mom a liar. Something inside her said that it made sense. “Why would you do this to me?” Spencer asked serious as a heart attack and mean as a tiger. “Why would you rip me away from my school, my family, my wife, my life in general? You took it all away from me and I want to know why!” Spencer shouted.

     

    “Because Spencer.” Paula began calm and cool. “You were ruining your life and I’m not going to just sit idly by while it happens. What I’m doing is helping you. I’m sorry if you don’t see it that way.” She finished.

     

    Spencer was quiet. In fact, the entire home was quiet. Ben was taking a shower in the other room and the only sound you could hear was water running. Spencer couldn’t tell the sound of the water running apart from the blood rushing through her veins. It was all the same to her.
