North of Somewhere (A Story) – (Chapter: Unexpected Cashier (Part 2))
Unwilling to be slave to the mistake that others in Ashley’s life had made before her, Spencer immediately followed Ashley out.
“Ashley!” Ashley, slow down!” Spencer screamed as soon as she spotted the girl, who was quickly making her way out of the building and onto the busy LA street.
Ashley wanted to slow down, allow Spencer the opportunity to apologize, and let go of whatever had just happened. However, her pride wouldn’t let her. Spencer had hurt her. Couldn’t she see that Ashley was trying as hard as she could to make their relationship work?
“Ashley, please stop…please?” Spencer begged, her regret filling her voice.
It was the “please” that did it. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for Spencer that ended in “please.”
“Spence…”
“No, no. Just let me say what I have to say first, ok?”
“Fine,” Ashley replied, unwilling to let go of the harshness her voice carried.
“Ok, listen, I know that I screwed up back there. I just…I saw that girl and I got…and I got jealous, ok? I wish that I could say it’s going to be easy for me…you know, dealing with whatever’s happened in your past…”
“I don’t expect that, Spencer,” Ashley interrupted, her tone finally softening, “it’s not even easy for me to deal with all that stuff. I just want you to realize that I’m trying. Ok? I’m trying…”
“I know. Ashley…I know. I know,” Spencer responded, her arms sliding around Ashley’s back to pull her into a hug.
“Wait,” Ashley said, moving Spencer’s arms, “I have to know that you understand first. I can’t go back, Spence. I can’t go back and erase all the girls I’ve been with or all the drinking or the drugs or any of that. I can’t. All I can do is tell you that I’m willing to change…and mean it.”
“Ashley, I don’t want you to change. Ok, yes, I’ll admit that the drugs aren’t cool. No matter how corny this might sound, I want a drug-free Ashley. But all the things that make you who you are, I’d never want you to change those things. Ever.”
“I know. I know you wouldn’t,” Ashley said, nodding.
“Then we’re good?”
“You tell me.”
“I’m going to work on not being a crazy, jealous girlfriend and you’re going to not do drugs or sleep with people who work in movie theaters…at least while you’re with me, right?”
