North of Somewhere: All Grown Up – (Chapter: Hey Jealousy…)

They spent the next few weeks rebuilding the friendship they had lost so many years ago, Spencer trying harder than ever before to prove her loyalty to Ashley. She listened dutifully as Ashley talked endlessly about the dates she went on, offering up as much advice as she could before that familiar wave of jealousy clouded her rational thought process. Spencer tried to distract herself with other things—work, books, decorating her apartment, anything that took her mind off Ashley. Yet somehow she always found that her mind betrayed her and almost instantly returned to thoughts of the brunette.

Unbeknownst to the struggling blonde, Ashley was also plagued with thoughts of the girl who had gotten away, yet remained her friend. She saw Spencer all the time now. Dinners, movies, coffee, shows…they were together constantly. But no matter how much time they spent together, she never got over the yearning she felt when the blonde would walk into her view. Punishing Spencer for not fighting hard enough for their love was also punishing her, and it wasn’t fair. All she was waiting for was a sign from her ex that proved she was willing to let go of the past, sacrifice the comfort of being alone, and fall. Ashley needed her to fall, and she would be there without a doubt to catch her—every single time.

They had decided to meet for dinner at a restaurant near Ashley’s loft. Spencer arrived early, so she ordered a diet Coke for herself and a glass of Shiraz for Ashley—her favorite wine.

“Oh, and a sparkling water with lemon, please,” she said to the waitress. Ashley couldn’t enjoy her favorite wine without her signature glass of sparkling water with lemon.

Fifteen minutes later, Ashley collapsed at the table, red and out of breath.

“Are you ok?” Spencer asked, right eyebrow raised.

“Yeah, sorry I’m late. I just ran into this crazy chick I used to sort of date or whatever. Aww, you ordered my drinks!” Ashley said with a smile, sipping frantically on her sparkling water, “anyway, like I was saying, I ran into her about a block away and she wanted to do the whole ‘oh, it’s been so long…where have you been…what are you up to’ thing. I kept trying to tell her I was meeting someone but no! She just kept rambling on and on and on…”

    1. Oh lord, what is Spencer going to do? Hopefully, she’s making a public declaration of her love for Ashley and not just making a fool of herself. These two could never be just friends. What were they thinking? Maureen needs to go away now.

    3. OMG! Now you’ve got to update ASAP. I hope she is honest about how she feels. It was like I could almost see what Ashley’s face looked like when she heard Spencer’s name… too cool you are… lol…
