Not Today, Maybe Tomorrow – (Chapter: Chapter 4)
Spencer’s POV
"Come on, you have to come." I pleaded. I was very close to getting on my knees and begging. I needed her to come. Everyone was going to be coupled off and having her there would make me look a little less pathetic.
"I’m not going to be your beard. Plus your mother scares the shit out of me." Melanie had met my mother a hand full of times, and each time it wasn’t pretty. Both were very opinionated and as scary as Melanie thought Paula was, you’d never be able to tell.
"Oh please, you could eat her for breakfast. You’re just as hard headed as she is." I was getting ready for another day at work and Melanie had stopped by so we could drive in together. I had just gotten off the phone with Kyla, finalizing plans for my flight and when I would be getting in for the wedding. I loved Kyla, but I was not loving the idea of having to go back to LA. I enjoyed having my space from that life.
"First off ew, bad mental image. I would never ‘eat’ Paula. Second you’re 25 Spencer, you’re a big girl. You’ve been back there before and everything turned out fine. What are you so scared of now?" It was a legitimate question, I had been back before. I went once or twice a year, when I couldn’t avoid it any longer. It just happened to be getting more awkward as time went on. Everyone was starting to get settled in their lives and I wasn’t as big a part of them anymore. I was living my own life, and as hard as we tried to stay in touch, I wasn’t stupid enough to not notice that we were drifting. At least I was, away from the people that were once so important to me.
"I don’t know Mel, it’s just different now. You know that. I just don’t feel like I’m a part of them anymore. Then of course there’s Ash, and we both know how well that friendship is going." I tried to explain slipping on my shoes. I tried so hard to be friends with Ashley. After everything that happened between the two of us I know it was a long shot. It worked for a while, always awkward at best, but at least we still spoke. That just seemed to be fizzling along with everything else. I understand where she’s coming from, I still like to think I know her pretty well. I get that I’m not her favourite person and I even understand why. Maybe that’s why this trip was getting to me, I didn’t want to see Ashley, mostly because she’d be able to see right through me.
