    Nothing But A Heartache

    Chapter Five

    ASHLEY’S POV:

Ashley is at the gym swimming laps. While she is swimming she has flashbacks of her relationship with her ex-girlfriend Brooke.

    Lap One.

Brooke is in her apartment putting away groceries when Ashley comes in.

    Ashley: Hey Baby.

Ashley wraps her arms around Brooke’s waist from behind.

    Brooke: Hey.

Ashley notices the gloomy tone in Brooke’s voice.

    Ashley: What’s wrong?

    Brooke: Nothing I’m fine.

Ashley isn’t convinced. She turns Brooke around so they are facing each other.

Ashley: Come on, it’s me. What’s on your mind?

    Brooke: I saw Chad today.

    Ashley: Chad? Your ex-boyfriend Chad?

    Brooke: Yeah.

Ashley: Oh, umm did you talk to him?

Brooke: Yeah a little bit. He was just wondering how I was doing and how school was going. You’re not upset are you?

Ashley: No, I’m glad you told me though.

    Brooke: I love you.

    Ashley: I love you too.

Breathe, Breathe. Here comes the turn around. Lap Three.

Ashley and Brooke are in Ashley’s bedroom kissing. Ashley’s takes off her jacket and moves Brooke toward the bed. They fall onto the bed and Ashley is laying on top of Brooke. Ashley begins to play with Brooke’s shirt when Brookes pulls away.

Brooke: I should get ready for bed. I have to get up early.

    Ashley looks hurt and confused.

Ashley: Have I done something wrong?

Brooke: No, why would you think that?

Ashley: Because every time I get close to you, you pull away.

Brooke: I said everything’s fine. I’m just tired.

Ashley: Does this have something to do with Chad? I mean are you…are you starting to have feelings for him again?

Brooke: What? How can you ask me that?

Ashley: Look I’m sorry, but ever since you started talking to him again it seems like it’s pulling you further away from me. You and I both know there is something different about you and I just want to know if he’s the reason.

    Brooke sighs.

Brooke: You have nothing to worry about.

Keep kicking. Push, Ashley, Push. Breathe. Lap Seven.

Ashley is sitting on a park bench. Brooke walks up to her.

    Brooke: Hey.

    Ashley: Hey.

Brookes sits down next to Ashley. There is a short silence between the two.

Brooke: Look Ashley about last night…the kiss… I just got caught up in the moment with him. I didn’t mean for it to happen.

Ashley: You’re still in love with him.

    Brooke: Ash, no.

Ashley: Yes. I know how much he meant to you Brooke. I was your best friend when you two were together and I was your shoulder to cry on when he broke up with you. I thought I could be the person who could make you truly happy and be the one person you needed the most, but I’m not.

Ashley takes in a deep breath and tries not to cry.

Ashley: I know Chad is the one you wan to be with. So I’m letting you go and I want you to follow your heart.

    Brooke: Ash I-

Ashley kisses Brooke on the forehead.

Ashley: Take care of yourself Brooke.

Ashley gives Brooke a small smile while a tear escapes her eye. Ashley then gets up and begins to leave.

Brooke: Ash, I’ll see you around, won’t I?

    Ashley: No…you won’t.

    Relax. Just Breathe.
