Out Of My Element – (Chapter: Just Take What’s Yours & I’ll Take Mine)

We stood there, silent, the open front door letting the sound of rain occupy the quiet. I shut the door as I grabbed her hand and walked her over to the couch and sat her down. Then I went to my bathroom and grabbed a towel. She just held it in her lap and looked down.
"Lauren why are you doing this? Why are you here?" She looked up and her eyes began to fill with tears.
"I had to see you. I couldn’t just let you go." She looked down again and I tried to comprehend what was happening.
"Look, I’m trying my best to get over you, to get over us. You meant the world to me for the longest time, and all that came to a screeching halt the other night. You couldn’t deal with us being together, so you ended it then. And now when it’s convienent for you, you just expect me to pretend like it never happened? You just want me to go back to how things were before? I can’t do that, Lo. Not now. It’s not worth it, to pretend to be something, someone that I’m not for you. You need to figure out what’s most important to you. Because I’ve figured it out for myself."
"Why can’t you just give it another chance?" She glared into me, the sadness in her eyes turning into anger.
"Why? You just want to go back to having a relationship that only exists behind closed doors? I don’t want to hide it Lauren, and that means I can’t be with someone who does."
"You didn’t have a problem with that before." She said with a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
"You’re right, I didn’t. But things have changed. They changed the minute you threw everything we had away, when you pretended like I didn’t mean anything to you because of what other people thought."
"You don’t understand…" I interruped her before she could finish.
"You weren’t willing to give us a chance then, and I’m not willing to give us one now." She got up and set the towel back down on the couch. I sat there looking down at my hands and listened to her leave, again. My phone lit up on the table and the screen flashed ’Incoming call: Spencer’. I picked it up and smiled at who was on the other line.
    "Hey you!"
"Hey! I just thought I’d call to let you know I’m home."
"Good. I was worried. This weather is horrible."
"Yeah tell me about it. There wasn’t much traffic on the road so it was okay to drive in." I tried to think of something to talk about, but she beat me to it.
"How did your night turn out?" I decided to tell her about what had happened.
"Lo showed up. Gave me her sob story."
"Wow, random. How did that go?"
"It wasn’t the best situation I’ve ever been in. She just left actually."
    "So you guys aren’t…"
"No. It, uh, it’s really over now."
    "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I ummm, I’m great. I needed this."
"I’m glad. Like I said, she gave up something, someone, really special."
"Thank you. That really means a lot."
"Not a problem." I smiled again, bigger this time. It was late and I didn’t want to keep her up but I didn’t want to hang up either.
"So are you cool and everything? After tonight.."
"I’m good actually. I hope that we’re still cool too.."
"Of course. I had a lot of fun tonight."
"Me too. We’ll get together again sometime right?"
    "Sometime soon. Definitely."
"Alright. I’ll call you tomorrow okay?"
"Sure. Have a good night, Spence."
    "You too, Ash. Bye."

I hung up and walked into my bedroom, tossing my phone onto the bed. I pinned my hair up and walked to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. As I took a swig of mouthwash I heard the familiar beeping from AIM on my computer. I spit it out and walked over to my desk, sitting down as I opened my computer.

    ohio_qte: i know you’re still there.
auto response from ashrocksit: not here, call me. <3

I cancelled the away message and typed a response.

ashrocksit: can’t get enough of me huh?
ohio_qte: duh! lol.. no i can’t sleep, this stupid storm is keeping me awake.
ashrocksit: aw, not a big fan of the thunder and lightning scene?
    ohio_qte: not really.
ashrocksit: well i’d be glad to keep you company
ohio_qte: thx!! so. what’s your fave color?
    ashrocksit: green. yours?
    ohio_qte: green! your turn.
    ashrocksit: fave flower?
    ohio_qte: white roses.. you?
    ashrocksit: carnations.
    ohio_qte: fave animal?
    ashrocksit: ummmm, monkeys. you?
    ohio_qte: umm, giraffes.
ashrocksit: lol. sweet. when’s your b-day?
    ohio_qte: nov. 14..
ashrocksit: bummer, i missed it. mine’s june 1st.
ohio_qte: oh that’s only in a few weeks. like 2 right?
    ashrocksit: yup!!
ohio_qte: well, we will def celebrate!
    ashrocksit: awesome!!

I fought my eyes to stay open as I stared at the computer screen. It was one o’clock in the morning. The storm had calmed a little outside and Spencer and I continued to make conversation with more random facts about ourselves. Finally I couldn’t fight it anymore.

ashrocksit: well i think i’m gonna call it a night chica.
ohio_qte: ok, thx for keeping me company!!
ashrocksit: anytime.  have a good night spence.
ohio_qte: you too ash. love ya girl!

I felt myself blush and I smiled and responded for the last time.

    ashrocksit: love you too <3

With that I signed off and hopped into bed, smiling the entire time.
