I watched her wake up. It reminded me of the first night that we spent together. She rolled over enough to realize that I wasn’t lying in the bed. She looked around and seemed to be afraid that it was all just a fantasy. I smiled as I watched her. It amazed me that after all these years she still fell asleep holding me.

“Ashley?” Spencer’s voice was husky as she awoke.

“I’m right here Spence.” She looked up at me, I was standing in the doorway and I tried not to smile too much, “Sleep well?”

She sat up in the bed, “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what? Falling asleep holding me?”

“I…I can’t do this. I’m sorry Ashley.” Spencer stood up from the bed.

“It’s been ten years Spence. Don’t expect me to get my hopes up. Oh, and Glen dropped off Gabriel. He’s in the playpen downstairs sleeping. Glen said that he’d be back later on today.”

Spencer walked out into the hallway. She stopped and turned around, “Ashley you didn’t tell him about what happened last night did you?”

“What? No, I just told him that you hadn’t slept in days and that you finally crashed. Why does it matter Spencer?” I was getting annoyed.

“It matters because he’ll tell Shelby. He’s probably already told her about you staying here now. I’m sure that’s going to go over real well tomorrow.”

Her sarcasm was pissing me off, “You know what? Coming here was a bad idea. I’m just going to go change my clothes and get a hotel room so that you can go back to your ‘oh so great’ life.” I turned around to go back to her room when I felt a hand grab the back of my right arm.

“Ashley, please. I’m sorry. It’s just…last night I couldn’t sleep so I came into check on you. Looking at you sleeping, it made me remember how safe I felt when we were holding one another.”

I stood there. I didn’t know what to say. Everything that I wanted to say would only piss her off and I didn’t want to do that. I wanted us to be on good terms. But last night proved that things could only become more complicated, “I’m gonna go get dressed. Check on Gabriel.” I watched her turn and walk down the stairs.
