Sliding Doors – (Chapter: Chapter 9 Roommates)

Spencer: “Everything, I guess! It’s going to be great!”

Arthur: “Getting nervous about being so far away from home?”

Spencer: “A little. I’m going to miss you guys, and the cooking obviously, but I really feel like it’s something I have to do.” I take a big bite out of my sandwich and smile at him.

Arthur: “I just hope your roommate doesn’t mind that you talk in your sleep.” He gets up and goes over to the cabinet and grabs two glasses and heads over to the sink to fill them with water. I’m glad his back his turned so that he doesn’t see my face and my wide open mouth. Um…I talk in my sleep?

Spencer: “Ha, uh yeah. I um, didn’t know that I talked in my sleep.” He comes back to the table and sits down.

    Arthur: “Yeah, some nights.”

    Spencer: “You can hear me?”

Arthur: “Sometimes, mostly you mumble. What are you dreaming about?” I would have taken another big bite out of my sandwich to buy for time, however I had already finished it. Where’s a Twix when you need one?

    Spencer: “Oh, you know…stuff.”

Arthur: “Your mother talks in her sleep sometimes too. Usually when she’s really anxious.”

Spencer: “Yeah, well I guess with school coming up and everything…”

Arthur: “No, you’ve been doing it for years.”

    Spencer: “Wow, I never knew.”

Arthur: “Your mother doesn’t know if that’s what you’re worried about.” Our eyes lock and there is a moment between us that conveys exactly what I was dreaming about.

    Spencer: “Oh, good.”

Arthur: “Is Ashley going to USC too?”

    Spencer: “Dad…”

Arthur: “Spencer, I’m really glad that we’ve had these past few weeks to talk. With you growing up and everything I feel like I kind of missed out on getting to know my little girl. I’m not surprised that you didn’t come to talk to me before, but now that we’ve had these opportunities to get to know another again, I want to take advantage of it before you leave. I love you unconditionally and all I want in the world is for you to be happy. Please, never feel like you can’t come and talk to me. Because no matter what, I will always love you and I will always be there for you.” His sincerity is apparent and I can’t help but smile at him, my eyes watery from his confession.
