    Ashley is in high school and is falling for an older Spencer.

    “I couldn’t stop her,” he said softly. “She said she was coming and just hung up.”

    I knew why he was saying this. “Right. I’ll go out and wait for her. You can just go to your gig. I won’t wake Mom.”

    He pulled my face up to his and kissed my forehead. “That’s my girl. Don’t worry, Ashley. Spencer loves you. I could see it last night. Just give her some time.” I nodded and he kissed my forehead once more before rising and slinking out of my room. I didn’t hear the front door close, but two minutes later I heard the engine of his mustang revving up.

    I exhaled, standing and looking at myself in the mirror. I had bed hair and was wearing boxers and a white t-shirt. I considered changing, but then shrugged it off. Instead I pulled on a jean jacket, flip flops, and the silver dolphin necklace that Liza had bought me two years ago. It was good luck she liked to say.

    I crept out of my room and down the stairs noiselessly. I pulled the front door closed behind me with even less sound. It was chilly out and I sat cross-legged on my front step, folding my legs beneath me. I had no idea what I was doing with Spencer. She was too old for me, too removed from me. I buried my head in my chest and cried, silently awaiting the conversation that would soon come. Hopefully, she’d let me down easy, after explaining how sorry she was for leading me on. They were probably engaged or something, committed forever and ever. I cried even harder. But she was MY Spencer.

    This was too much. I raked my hands through my hair, getting my fingers caught in the brown curls. I was crying hard now, focusing all my strength on sitting up straight, on not falling forward and lying there, defeated.

    I heard car wheels on gravel and looked up. It was Spencer. She was driving a Jeep Tahoe. It was big and green and bulky and I knew that it was his. It had to be. She hadn’t looked over at me but opened the driver’s side and clambered out of the car. She placed two sandaled feet onto the ground and looked up at the house. She spotted me and our gazes locked. I couldn’t read her expression from so far away, but her hands were clinched into fists. She was wearing pink pajama pants and a white beater. I squeezed my eyes shut at the site of her, blocking out the endless blue eyes. I tried to wipe her from my retinas, but the image was still there, still burning a hole into me.

But I HATE the fact that spencer’s with someone. well, I now have to hate aiden, even though it’s not his fault this time, i just have to hate him for being in between spashley, well not hate, just strongly dislike…for now that is.
