Spencer and Ashley had spent the day at the mall. They hadn’t bought very much. Spencer bought a CD and some jeans. Ashley bought a pair of jeans and a swimsuit. They went back to Spencer’s house after they were done. They walked inside and started walking upstairs when Arthur stopped them.

            “Girls,” Arthur said, “you’re back. Did you eat yet?”

            “Yeah,” Spencer said. “We had some Chinese at the food court.”

            “Ok,” Arthur said. “If you need anything I’ll be in the den doing some work.”

            “Ok dad,” Spencer said. “We’ll be upstairs.”

            “Ok honey,” Arthur said. He turned around and walked to the den.

            Spencer and Ashley walked upstairs to her room. They sat their stuff down at the door. Ashley laid down on Spencer’s bed. Spencer sat down on the computer chair.

            “Today was fun,” Ashley said looking over at Spencer.

            “It was,” Spencer smiled. Her phone started ringing. “It’s my mom.”

            “You should answer it,” Ashley said.

            “I guess,” Spencer said. She answered her phone. “Hello.”

            “Hey Spencer,” Paula said. “What are you doing?”

            “Nothing right now,” Spencer said. “I just got home.”

            “Where have you been?” Paula asked.

            “I was at the mall with Ashley,” Spencer said.

            “Oh,” Paula said sounding angry. “Is she there with you?”

            “Yes,” Spencer said. “Why?”

            “Oh nothing,” Paula said.

            “Why can’t you tell me the truth?” Spencer demanded.

            “You want to know the truth?” Paula asked.

            “Yes I do,” Spencer said.

            “I don’t like her,” Paula said. “She turned you into something you’re not. She’s been a bad influence on you.”

            “You have no idea what you’re talking about,” Spencer said.

            “I don’t want to argue with you, Spencer,” Paula said.

            “I have to go,” Spencer said. “It’s time to eat.”

            “Ok,” Paula said. “I’ll give you a call later.”

            “Ok,” Spencer said. “Bye.”

            She hung up the phone and walked over to the bed. She laid down next to Ashley.

            “You ok?” Ashley asked.

            “My mom ruins everything,” Spencer said.

            “It’s ok babe,” Ashley said. She rubbed Spencer’s stomach. “She’ll come around sometime.”
