Abby drifted just below consciousness, neither her mind nor body wanting to let go of the comfort of sleep. She turned her head slightly and felt fingers gently brush hair back from her forehead. She groaned as pain radiated from her abdomen.

"It’s okay, Abby," but it wasn’t Luka’s voice.

Her eyes fluttered open and she was only slightly surprised to see Kerry leaning over her. She tried to speak, but her mouth was so dry that no words came out.

"Just rest."

Abby, even as she was fighting through the haze, noticed the emotions on Kerry’s face and in her voice. The younger woman lifted her hand from her side and found Kerry’s that was resting on the rail of the bed. She closed her eyes knowing that she wasn’t strong enough yet to ask Kerry about the baby. Or rather she wasn’t strong enough to hear the answer, but Kerry saw the question in her eyes.

"Luka’s with him in the NICU. I offered to stay with the baby so that Luka could come stay with you, but he said that he thought you’d want him to be there."

Abby nodded then glanced toward the pitcher of water that sat on the side table. Kerry pulled away from Abby and poured some water into a cup. She adjusted the bed to bring Abby into a slightly more upright position and held the water to the resident’s lips. Abby drank a little then placed her head back on the pillow.

"Thanks."

"Do you want more?"

Abby shook her head.

"I meant thank you for being here."

"Of course." Kerry’s hand found Abby’s again and squeezed it gently. "You’ll get through this, the three of you."

Abby barely caught this as she drifted back to sleep. Kerry stayed for about ten more minutes to make sure that her friend was resting and then made the walk back to the NICU. She stood just outside and watched Luka through the glass while she pulled on the sterile gown before entering.

Luka looked at her as she placed her hand gently on his back.

"How is she?"

"Sleeping. She woke up for just a couple of minutes and I told her that you were here. How are you?"

"There hasn’t been any change," he responded, answering about his son’s condition instead of his own.

"I’ll stay with him. Go be with Abby."

He shook his head in protest.

"Dr. Weaver?"

She turned to the nurse.

"There’s a Dr. Legaspi in the hall to see you. She said she’d wait."

Luka and Kerry both turned to look towards the glass doors. Kerry hesitated and then raised her index finger to indicate that she’d be out in minute.

"I didn’t know she was back," Luka commented as he turned back to the baby.

"Neither did I," but Kerry was trying to focus on Luka. "I’ll be right back and then I want you to go be with Abby. You need to get out of here."

He didn’t respond, but she patted his arm before leaving.

"Hi Kerry."

"Kim, what are you doing here?"

"I’ve been working at Rush for a few months. Your psych department called over and asked for some support."

"Oh, good."

"Kerry, are you all right? Were you in the ER when it happened?"

"No, I was upstairs in a meeting."

"I heard that a security guard was killed and that two or three of your staff were injured. There’s been some reports that one of the nurses was kidnapped."

"Sam. Her ex-boyfriend was one of the shooters," Kerry responded looked back at Luka. There was too much going on right now for her to deal with the emotions that came up when she looked at Kim.

"Kerry, I know that things are really hectic for you right now, but could you make sure that I have privileges here. I don’t want to have to deal with administrative hassles while I’m trying to help your staff."

Kerry turned back to her, struck by how completely professional she sounded. There was no hint in her voice that they had once been lovers.

"Sure. I’ll take care of it. Thanks for coming over."

"Professional courtesy," Kim replied and immediately regretted it. "I volunteered. I needed to see that you were okay."
