Surviving Desperations – (Chapter: Isolated)
Nikki felt herself been shaken awake, and opened her eyes to a face of concern. The Scottish lilt asked, "Nikki, it was a bad dream, that’s all… a bad dream." Nikki started to weep, and Helen pulled her into her arms, stroking her hair softly. "Ssssh, sweetheart…. sssh." When Nikki’s weeps subsided she took in her surroundings and saw that she had fallen asleep outdoors. She looked up and saw Trish’s star and whispered, "I am sorry." "There’s no need to apologise," Helen replied having misunderstood the apology. She hugged Nikki tightly again before letting her go and standing up. Nikki watched her stretch upwards, her t-shirt lifting slightly baring her midriff. Nikki admired the toned and tanned abdomen which lay beneath and scolded herself for her inner thoughts. "I’ve got to get back… " Helen stopped talking and stared in the distance. Nikki looked in that direction and saw two headlights barely visible. The horn became audible and louder as the vehicle grew closer.
The man jumped out screaming, "Tempesta! Tempesta!" Helen just ran shouting, "Storm!" to Nikki. The entire camp woke to the panic and started loading up the two trucks with the children, and elderly. Nikki grabbed the little boy from her tent and gave him to Maria. "Helen, where is she?" Nikki shouted over the panic. Nikki looked around her and could not see the Scots woman anywhere. "Take him. I am going to find her." Nikki ran back and could hear the trucks gathering speed and the winds picking up.
"Helen," she screamed but her voice went unheard amongst the cracks and howls of the storm approaching. Nikki pulled open the entrance of the hospital tent and found Helen shielding the elderly man’s body. Nikki knew speaking would be poinless and so just tried to drag the smaller woman away. Helen shook her head defiantly, and would not move. Nikki began to panic. She wasn’t going to leave her friend behind. She walked over to the man’s head and grabbed him from under the shoulders. She started to pick him up, and Helen took the signal and lifted his feet. Nikki guided them as quickly as she could to the building where she had rested. They lay him on the bed and Nikki kicked the door shut. The noises of the storm was unbearable, and Helen covered her ears. Nikki instantly wanted to protect her, and was by her side holding her.
