    Surviving Desperations – (Chapter: Promises)

Nikki woke to find the sun rising. She felt a weight on her and saw that Helen had wrapped herself around her, limbs protectively trapping her. Nikki smiled and stroked Helen’s face, pushing aside the loose strands that had fallen onto her face. Helen stirred at the contact but didn’t wake. Nikki thought how she had slept peacefully, no nightmares. Helen made her feel safe and obviously she was having the same affect on her judging by the peace on the Scot’s face. Nikki kissed Helen lightly on the forehead and then tried to move. However, Helen wasn’t making it easy. Nikki pushed her gently of her but Helen woke up in midroll, with Nikki facing her. Nikki said softly, "Good Morning." Helen blushed slightly at their closeness and just nodded her head. Nikki sensed her discomfort and jumped up quickly. "We should start walking."

Nikki gathered their things together and started walking. Helen feeling confused by Nikki’s coldness followed closely behind. Everytime Helen tried to speak, Nikki answered in gruff short answers and continued walking. They stopped to rest and Nikki barely looked at Helen as she ate her apple. Helen sighed, "Nikki, what’s wrong?" Nikki didn’t look at her and just answered a gruff nothing. "Nikki, you’ve been acting weird since this morning, what is up?" Nikki just smiled cruelly at Helen. "You… you’re what’s up." Helen was taken aback by the cruel statement, "Why? What have I done?" Nikki mimicked her. "What have I done? The way you looked at me when you woke up… you were scared that I was going to do something to you… Jesus!" Helen’s temper rose at Nikki’s harshness. "I wasn’t scared." Nikki laughed, "Yeah right…" Helen stood up and started walking. "Sod you Nikki!" Nikki watched her and then muttered "*****" before standing up and following her. "Helen, wait!" Helen kept walking feeling new tears spring to her eyes. Nikki walked faster ignoring the pain in her leg, "Helen please stop. I was being a *****. I am sorry!" Helen stopped suddenly and glared at Nikki, "Nikki, why don’t you just get it into you head that I care about you and consider you my friend… my only friend. I am not scared by you… you make me feel safe for God’s sake!" Helen’s accent became stronger with every word she had spoken. Nikki dropped to her knees and looked up at Helen with apologetic eyes. "I am idiot and deserve to be punished." She said evenly and seriously. Helen laughed and gave Nikki her hand to pull her up. "Yeah you are… not all of us can be perfect like me." Nikki smiled, "True, you are perfect." The seriousness of her words made Helen blush and smile. The two looked at their hands which were entwined together. Helen pulled Nikki into walking pace but did not leave go of her hand. There was comfort in the contact… and something else.
