    I had made the mistake of giving my heart to someone before.

    My own heart felt like it would explode as I looked up at this gorgeous girl.

    Ashley raised up so that she was sitting on my waist, legs straddled across my body. I could see her eyes searching mine. They were looking intently to see if I would accept what she had so bravely offered.

    I felt time slow in to a freeze frame flip book, the pages being turned oh so slowly by my mind. It was ironic in that everything happening between Ashley and I was happening so fast. I had only known this girl a fraction of time yet, she was giving me such a rare gift.

    It was something I should only take if I could promise her that I would never give it back. We both knew that if I did take her heart tonight only to return it later it would go back in a million pieces. Did I want that responsibility? To promise that I would never break her heart? I knew that this was a two way street. It could never work with only one heart, no matter how much love it had to give. It would only be fair that if she was to give her heart to me that I should be able to give her mine in return. Was I ready to give something of mine that I had worked so hard to protect? Was is fair giving her something that was so damaged? What if I didn’t have it to give anyway?

    I had made the mistake of giving my heart to someone before. I gave it so willingly and completely. I was a fool in love and convinced myself that my love for her was enough for both of us. Jena never honestly offered the same back to me and after awhile she returned my heart back to me in so many shattered pieces.

    I responded by trying to put it back together by feigning indifference. If I never let anyone in they wouldn’t see the damaged goods behind the veil and they would never have the chance to break it any further. I let the girls come and go only when I let myself be enveloped in a ‘safe’ alcohol haze. It was my crutch and I used it to hobble away the first chance the expressed any interest further than what I wanted to give.
