The Odyssey of Me – (Chapter: Change)

There’s a brief pause while the cheerleaders try to digest Madison’s words. Then, the fiery redheaded Co-captain Anna speaks up. “Oh I get it! You think you can come in here acting all nice and we’ll just forgive you and let you lead the squad again…Oh hell no!”

Madison shakes her head no and responds sincerely. “I came to apologize. I know I hurt you all especially you Anna…” She looks at Anna’s taller blonde girlfriend and squad co-captain and continues. “…and you Belle…You didn’t deserve the things I said. The way I acted was wrong. I get it now; I shouldn’t have judged you for being yourselves. I don’t feel that way anymore, and I think maybe the reason I did was because I was too horrible of a person to have a real relationship. So, I need to tell you two that what you have isn’t wrong, because love is never wrong. I just hope I can find a guy that can put a smile on my face like you two do every time you look at each other.”

The girlfriends look at each other and smile. Then Belle questions Madison skeptically. “So, what caused this sudden change of heart?”

Madison looks embarrassed. “You’re all going to think it’s stupid.” Anna speaks up. “If you’re telling the truth about your recent enlightenment, then no matter what it was, it’s not stupid.” Madison is feeling reassured, nervous, and ashamed at the same time as she begins to tell the story. “I saw a commercial for that new show called End of Innocence. I thought it looked funny because there was this girl, she was a cheerleader too, and she was making fun of the lesbian couple on there. So I wanted to watch the episode to watch that chick pick on them ’cause she reminded me of me and I liked that. But the more I watched it I became upset with her treatment of the girls. She went too far….I went too far…I don’t expect to be put back on the squad or anything I just wanted to get that off my chest. I’ll understand if you can’t forgive me, or if you need more time, or whatever…I’ll leave you alone, but thanks for hearing me out.
