The Playground of the Rest of our Lives – (Chapter: Pancakes)
It had been a few months since Spencer’s first study date with Bradley; since then the two began spending more time together and soon enough took their relationship to the next level and began dating. Ashley was often subject to playing third wheel in the couple’s excursions but usually she didn’t mind because any time with Spencer was a good time with Spencer regardless of the circumstances.
Although the odds seemed against Ashley and Spencer’s friendship when her relationship began, Spencer was good for making sure that close to nothing changed with her best friend. They still had movie night fridays [despite it being the best ‘date night’], they still talked on the phone every Wednesday after Ashley’s voice lesson and Spencer’s cheerleading practice for at least an hour, and they still went to breakfast every other sunday morning. Ashley often wondered how Bradley felt about Spencer spending so much time with her, but she didn’t pay too much mind to it; boys needed to understand that girls had a handbook too and chicks most definitely came before dicks.
The girls’ breakfast outing was the next morning and Ashley realized that they still hadn’t decided where they wanted to eat this week. She picked up her phone and pressed "2" and waited as her blackberry called Spencer’s cell, which she picked up on the second ring.
"Hey girlie, what’s up?" Ashley smiled just hearing Spencer’s smile through the phone. She loved that she knhew Spencer well enough to hear her expressions through her voice.
"Not much stranger. Just wanted to know where we wanted to have breakfast tomorrow morning. What are you in the mood for?"
"Hmmm … well, last time we had pancakes so I think this week I’m feeling french toast! How’s that sound?"
"Uhm .. completely horrible." Ashley smirked into the phone.
"Okay good. I’ll pick you up around nine tomorrow okay? I’ll text you before I leave." Spencer playfully ignored Ashley’s disgust because she knew that french toast was actually Ashley’s favorite.
"And I’ll text you around eight to make sure you’re up! I’ll talk to you tomorrow chick. Love ya!" Ashley hung up the phone and laid back in bed. Spencer and Ashley had had this arrangment for as long as either could remember when important activities were going on; Spencer usually offered to drive when things were happening before the evening and she would always text Ashley before she left her house. And Ashley, who usually drove after five and until past midnight, would text Spencer to make sure she was awake in the morning. And if it was a night outing they would switch; Ashley would text before she left and Spence would text to make sure Ashley began getting ready with enough time to change her mind three times. They truely were the perfect match.
If only either had known it at the time.
