    The Return – (Chapter: Eleven)

Dinner was going well. They had talked about work, Henry, and Kim’s time in San Francisco, careful to avoid any discussion of her dalliances. They laughed, ate, and drank good wine. Things were going far better than either of them had thought would be the case.

Kim helped Kerry clear the table, but her host had insisted that she just put the dishes in the sink to be taken care of later.

“I think there’s some rule about doing dishes on the first date,” Kerry had joked as they took their wine glasses and what was left of the bottle of cabernet into the living room.

Kim set her glass on the coffee table and sat on the couch next to Kerry. They had their backs against the armrests, facing each other. It was small so even sitting at opposite ends had the women fairly close to one another.

“Tell me what you’re thinking,” Kim asked as she picked up her glass and took a sip. She held it close to her chest as she waited for Kerry’s response.

    “This has been wonderful.”

    “Yes, it has.”

Kim’s right hand was resting on the back of the couch and Kerry reached to touch it with her own left.

    “And what are you thinking?”

    “That I’m absolutely terrified.”

Kerry was about to take a drink of her wine, but placed the glass back down instead.

    “Terrified?”

“We’ve done this before. I think it’s only natural for me to be a little scared about what’s going to happen.”

“You think that I’m going to hurt you again.”

“I think that the potential is there for either of us to hurt the other.”

Kerry leaned closer and looked Kim in the eyes.

“Isn’t that potential there in any relationship?”

    “Of course, but …”

“Kim, you’re not the only one who is scared. There have only been three people in my life who I have let past all of my barriers. One died on an operating room table in front of me and another is asleep in that bedroom over there, and I almost lost him too. And you … Nothing scares me like the feeling of losing the people close to me. If I let you in I take that risk of loosing you again and frankly that makes me ill just to think about it.”
