    The Return – (Chapter: Nineteen)

Kerry woke a little more than an hour later, her neck slightly stiff, but the warm arms around her made everything right. They were still sitting in the window with the blanket covering their bodies. She smiled remembering the night before and how they came to be in this position.

Kerry remembered how perfect everything, from the dinner to Kim’s lips on her skin, had been. She sighed with contentment and Kim’s arms tightened around her.

"Good morning," Kim whispered in Kerry’s ear.

Kerry nuzzled back into lover’s chest. "Good morning."

    "Did you sleep well?"

"Very well," Kerry replied feeling Kim’s lips brushing lightly against her neck. "What time is it?"

    "About 6:30. You hungry?"

"Yes, but I’m enjoying this too much to move right now."

This was all of the encouragement that Kim needed. She gently pulled Kerry’s head back and began nibbling on her ear.

“Kim, we’re sitting in the window, without any clothes on.” Even though the words were filled with concern, the tone of Kerry’s voice was much more seductive.

“What’s your point?” Kim whispered back as her left hand began massaging Kerry’s corresponding breast.

“Don’t you think that somewhere with a little more privacy might be more appropriate?”

    “It’s early no ones up.”

“Kim …” Kerry was having trouble resisting, as Kim’s hand started moving south. She pulled Kim’s ear close to her mouth. “Take me back to bed,” she gasped as Kim’s hand found its target.

Kim withdrew her hand and gave her companion a tight squeeze. “If you insist.”

The next three hours were filled with a return to bed to continue what they had started in Kim’s living room, a shared shower, and some coffee and pastries. Kim had offered to cook Kerry a much larger breakfast, but Kerry had suggested something lighter and a venture outside for some window-shopping instead. She knew that if they remained at Kim’s much longer they would end up back in bed and it was too nice of a day and she was too worn out to go another round with the psychiatrist just yet.

“So what time do we need to get Henry?”

Kerry smiled at Kim over some fresh mangos she was feeling for freshness at the fruit market. She was so touched by how well Kim and Henry had connected.  ‘What time do we need to get Henry?’

At the same time, this worried Kerry. What if things with Kim didn’t work out? One of the reasons that she had resisted dating anyone was putting Henry in the possible situation of getting close to someone only to have them disappear from his life. Up until this point the only person she had allowed into his life at any meaningful level, other than the Lopezes, was Abby.

Kerry knew that they already gone beyond the point where Kim could leave without it effecting Henry. The only thing that she could do now to protect him was to make sure that the relationship worked.

As these words went through her head she realized that that had to happen to protect all three of them. If things went sour, nobody was getting out unscathed.

    “Kerry?”

    “Huh?”

“I thought I lost you there for a minute?”

Kerry was struck by the appropriateness of Kim’s words.

“I’m sorry, I’m just a little tired,” she responded, arching her brow and giving Kim a slightly mischievous grin. “I told Abby that I’d be by to get Henry around 2. You’re welcome to come with me. I know that he’d love to see you.”

“The feeling is mutual, but I wonder how happy Abby will be to see me.”

Kerry put her hand on Kim’s shoulder.

    “She’s happy for us.”

“Happy for us, Kerry, does not necessarily translate into being happy to see me.”

Kerry considered this for a moment.

“How about we invite them to have dinner with us sometime next weekend?”

Kim gave Kerry a quick kiss, doing an internal dance over the fact that the redhead didn’t flinch at this public display of affection.

    “I’d like that.”

“Good, now let’s go to that cafe over there and grab something more to eat. I’m starved.”
