    The Return – (Chapter: Thirteen)

After an afternoon of playing at the park, Henry was more than ready for a nap. Kerry couldn’t get over how great Kim was with him. He was a generally happy child, but Kim had him captivated, and he her. Even when he fell trying to regain his footing as he came off the slide, Kim was there to make him smile before any tears could start.

Kerry had never seen Kim with children before and had no idea what a natural the psychiatrist was. When they returned to Kerry’s, Kim offered to put Henry down for his nap, which his mom gladly allowed, although she did watch them from the doorway.

“Sleep tight, little man. I’ll see you later,” Kim said as she pulled the light blanket over the small form and left the room, meeting Kerry in the hall.

“Not bad, Dr. Legaspi,” Kerry whispered as they made their way back to the living room.

“I’d say you’ve done all of the hard stuff, Dr. Weaver. I haven’t seen him sick or particularly cranky yet.”

“True. You should have been here for the colic. I thought Sandy was going to lose her mind.” Kerry stopped, paused for a moment then turned to Kim. “I’m sorry.”

“Ker …” Kim paused trying to think of the right words. “Kerry, don’t ever apologize for talking about Sandy. She was his mother, your partner, and from everything you’ve said about her, an amazing woman. She will always be a part of your life and Henry’s life, and you should never feel bad about mentioning her in front of me. Understood?”

“Yes.” And with that Kerry reached up and kissed Kim briefly and gently on the lips. “I seem to have a knack for being with amazing women.”

Kim ducked her head and turned towards the kitchen, hiding the growing blush.

    “So, what’s for dinner?”

    “That’s rather presumptuous of you.”

“You’re right. It’s my turn to cook for you.”

“Can I take a rain check? I have some budget bullshit to read over and I’d love to get it done while he’s sleeping.”

“Sure. Look Ker, I have a pretty crazy week, but why don’t you come over Friday night and I’ll cook for you, actual cooking. I won’t call for take-out.”
