Things Meant To Be – (Chapter: 9)

South Of Nowhere – 2.09 – Things Meant To Be

“Grandma, why don’t you say grace?”  Spencer said in a sweet voice, she’d instantly decided she was going to play their game.  She was going to fight back with the one thing they didn’t have, logic.  That and the hidden fact that her very own mother, Paula, was cheating on her father, wasn’t that a sin?

Paula cast a guarded look to her mother, and Arthur’s jaw was popping, and clenched.  “Yes Nancy, why don’t you say grace?”  Arthur offered.  Glen made the sign of the cross and Clay tried not to chuckle.

“All Mighty Father, bless this table, and this food, and this gracious family, god fearing family.  Please guide them from their unrighteous path away from You, and grace them with Your presence in their lives.  Take them back into Your heart.”  Nancy said.  Spencer gripped her father’s hand tightly, the other hand was held by Glen, who squeezed it gently.  He looked over at her, nodding.  Telling her that he was there for her, no matter what.

“So let’s eat.”  Clay said with a grin, and a wink to Spencer.

“So what brings you to L.A. Nancy?”  Arthur asked.  Paula was slowly sliding down her chair, and Spencer felt some sort of satisfaction in that.  Had her mother known that Nancy was coming?  Maybe not, the look on Paula’s face was hard to watch, so Spencer looked away.

“Could it be she’s here to help mom pack?”  Spencer cast out, batting her dark blue eyes.

“Spencer…”  Arthur threatened softly.  Spencer took a sip of water and shrugged sarcastically.

                “Pack?”  Nancy asked.

                “Nothing mom.”  Paula said quickly.

“Nothing?  No, your daughter seems to have an assumption that you are moving?  Perhaps this move to L.A. was the wrong thing for your family, and you’ve figured that out and are moving back to Ohio?”

“We’re not moving back to Ohio.”  Paula whispered.

“Hell no.”  Glen chimed in.  “Sorry.”  He muttered, making the sign of the cross and Spencer snickered.

“I would like to discuss you taking my daughter’s clothes, and cell phone?”  Arthur asked, taking a bite of chicken.  The three children were silent.  Long moments passed and then.

    3. I really like how you incorporate all the characters into the story. It’s definitely different from the other Spashley stories out there & I am truly enjoying it!
