Things Meant To Be – (Chapter: 8)

South Of Nowhere – 2.08 – Things Meant To Be

“Grandma….”  Clay said as he walked into the kitchen to find his Grandmother, Paula’s mother, making lemonade.  The look on Clay’s face must have shown his surprise.  His grandmother turned, seeing his look and her smile brightened, to try to lull him into her corner.  Nancy Potter was here for a reason, her daughter had failed at rearing her children properly.

“Clay you handsome young man, come here and give me a hug.”  The woman smiled, wiping her hands on the apron and Clay stepped into her outstretched arms.

“What are you doing here?”  Clay asked oddly.  Things had been insane the last week, and now an added pressure of keeping things together around their very strict grandmother.

“Not glad to see me young man?”  She smiled.  Putting her hands on her hips, she and Paula looked strikingly alike.  The same hair color, the same eyes, and the same beliefs, Clay bit his lip.

“No.  I am I just thought you were coming out later this year….”

“Clay – did you see English book?  I had it in the car and now it’s…”  Spencer skidded to a stop at the door of the kitchen.  “…Grandma…”  Spencer swallowed.  Her mother was ganging up the troops on her, she’d called in reinforcements.  She’d called in the Grandmother.  The woman that would drag them out of bed at five a.m. to attend Mass at Dawn.

“If it isn’t my favorite granddaughter.”  Nancy stated brightly.

“Your only granddaughter, hi Grandma.”  Spencer said softly.  “Clay, did you see my book?”

“Yeah, I left it on the first step of the stairs.”  Clay answered her.

“So this is the way you greet me?  What is wrong with you children?  Has L.A. eradicated your manners?”  Her Grandmother asked.  Coldness in the older woman’s voice, Spencer took a deep breath, stepped forward, and gave the woman a very cool hug.

“Sorry.  I’m stressed about this English paper.”

“I’m sure you are dear, when is your father due back with Glen?”  Their Grandmother asked.  Clay looked over at Spencer, who was looking rather nervous and seemed to want out of the room as quickly as she could.
