This Highway is Barren and Smells of Regret
"I once picked up a hitchhiker. He taught me how to whittle. I said ‘Hot damn, Jim-daddy, you the cat’s meow.”
1955. Location Unknown.
The metallic taste invades my mouth and I shift it around inside, the flavor tainting my saliva. I drag the tip of my tongue across the top row of teeth, pushing it up deep into my gums, saving it for later.
I inhale deeply, dust particles attaching themselves to my nose hairs. The threat of a sneeze is on the horizon, and I can’t tell yet if this action will inspire me or force the hate to rise.
Your lips press into mine, the stubble from your cheeks rubbing me raw. This is love, kind of, but more a test of survival; your hardness fuels me, prepares me for what is to come, and that is why I am with you. Security, protection…someone to defend my honor and buy me liquor.
My four brother’s stand behind us, ears pricked up like nervous dogs, smirks on their faces, ketchup stains on their shirts, ready for the rumble to go down. Never mind what momma said, “You boys cut the fighting, and show your sister how a proper bo’ behaves.” Never mind that momma is dead and is looking down upon us with disgust, the Parker boys a bunch of no-good trouble makers, their sister just a two dime slut with the face of an angel.
A wad of spit hits the dirt by my feet with a thump. I look up at my Bobby, imagining him in a cheap suit on our inevitable future wedding night, the day after I get knocked up, our blissful final years decided within fifteen minutes of lustful groping and screwing in the back of daddy’s car.
You wink at me, but it’s gone in a flash, your black hair slicked back nice and tight, a cigarette stuck precariously to your lower lip, and it looks like a magic trick, some grand illusion that I know is false, but still never ceases to impress. The heat is building as the sun barrels down. I can see tiny droplets of sweat speckled about across your white tee, and I fight to run my hands down your thick chest, because I like to feel the curved muscles of your chest against my fingertips…and I know that is what I am expected to do.

My oh my. I pm’d you awhile ago about the intensity of your writing but i’m not sure you got it. I love the fact that I have to pay close attention to what’s happening or I miss it. And yet you weave the most amazing stories. You are… wow. My oh my.
