What Happens Next – (Chapter: 10: Where is Everybody?)

Arthur sat in the interrogation room, his head in his hands. He heard the door open and someone else sit down. Rubbing his eyes, he finally sat up again. “Mr. Carlin, this is my partner Detective Mason. He’s going to ask you a few more questions.” Arthur sighed heavily as he looked at the woman sitting across from him. He had given his statement to Detective Cain already. “Detective, I’ve already told you what happened twice, please, I just want to know how my wife and daughter are doing! Please!” Detective Cain leaned closer to Arthur, “Mr. Carlin, I promise you, we are doing everything we can to find out your wife’s condition.” Arthur tried to keep himself calm; this was the same line he had heard for the past two hours, “What about my daughter, Spencer?” Detective Mason cleared his throat loudly, “Look, Mr. Carlin, I’ve gone over your statement and I just have a few more questions for you.” Arthur stood up from the table, running his hands through his hair as he struggled to keep his composure. “Mr. Carlin, please sit back down!” Arthur turned around and glared at the two detectives, “I am not answering anything else until I find out about my wife and daughter!”

“Who are you talking about?”, Spencer tried to focus on the woman kneeling next to her. “It’s okay honey, you might be confused for a little while. I’m Detective Cain. How are feeling? Do you hurt anywhere?” Spencer felt completely disoriented, her head was pounding and her vision seemed blurry, “I don’t know…I don’t…I …” Spencer trailed off as she realized that she couldn’t see her father anywhere, “Where’s my dad?” Detective Cain, examined Spencer, trying to gauge if she could handle what she needed to tell her. “Spencer, listen, we had to take your father into custody. He hurt your mom pretty bad and another woman, Christine…”  Spencer could only hear the sound of blood rushing to her head. ‘Oh my GOD they think my dad did this!’ Detective Cain watched as Spencer became even paler, “Hey, are you okay? Spencer? Hey?”

Spencer wobbly tried to get up from the ground. Detective Cain, grabbed her arm and kept her from moving, “Spencer you can barely sit up right now, just give your body a minute. I know you’re upset about your father, but he can’t hurt you or your mom anymore.” Spencer looked at Detective Cain, her voice breaking as she explained, “My dad didn’t do anything! He came here to stop my mom from hurting Ashley or me!” “Spencer, your dad told us that he hit your mother. He said he hit her hard enough to knock her unconscious.” Spencer sighed, “Yes, he did hit my mom, but he didn’t have a choice. She was hysterical and he couldn’t hold her much longer. He was afraid of what would happen if she got loose. My mom…she…she…was trying to hurt Ashley.”
