What Might Have Been – (Chapter: Spencer spills her guts)
Story written on July 4, 2006 by lostinthecity.
Within minutes of entering their dorm room Jamie attacked Spencer. "Okay you’re going to spill now…why is one of the hottest singers in the goddamned world right now singing love songs about my roommate? Why did my roommate freak out and run away the second she saw said singer? I want answers Spencer! We’ve been best friends for almost four years…did you maybe forget a few details of your life in the process?" Spencer stopped Jamie "Okay Jamie, i’ll talk, but you have to listen and not say anything until i’m finished? Promise?" Jamie promised and Spencer took a deep breath and began.
"When I was a sophomore in high school I moved to Los Angeles from Ohio. The day I started at King High I met Ashley. She was a royal bitch, but for some reason I took a liking to her. She became my best friend almost instantly. It didn’t take long for me to figure out that Ashley liked girls and that in particular Ashley liked me. She flirted constantly. What surprised me was that I began to flirt back. In Ohio I had had a few boyfriends, but they never meant much to me, I never figured I could be gay though. People in my town just weren’t gay. We all went to the same church and we all heard the same sermons about how gay people were going to hell. When I met Ashley that all changed for me. She helped me find who I was. I fell head over heels in love with her and it was mutual. My mom hated her and the idea of having a gay daughter so she abandoned our family, ran away with Doctor Ben, and to be honest me, Clay and even Glen were better for it. During our Junior year of high school Ashley got her big break…the chance to go on tour in Europe. She got a private tutor and off she went. She knew I had to stay in school, but she called me every day and sent me post cards and packages and I waited out Junior Year for her. She kept promising that she would come back for our Senior year so we could spend it together, but in May of our Junior year she told me that she had gotten the chance to take the tour out to Asia and if she did it and it went well they’d have her recording the next year and within a few years touring North America. I didn’t want to tell her no to her dreams, so I let her go, but she took my heart with her. She still called and wrote every night, but I slowly stopped answering. My heart was too broken without her. She sent me letters and flowers and i’d just leave them on my kitchen table. That summer I finished off what was left of my required credits and graduated early. I made a deal with Harvard about getting in early and here I am. I left no address for Ashley, I didn’t even tell her where I was going. I made my family promise to never inform her that I was in Massachusetts and that was it. Clay told me that Ashley came back halfway through our senior year ready to graduate with me. She had cut off her Asian tour because I had stopped returning her phone calls and she was scared of what I was thinking and feeling, so she cut off her tour and came home only to find out that I had disappeared and refused to be found by her. Eventually I forced Clay to stop telling me information about Ash’s life and her career, it was just hurting too much. On the occasion that i’d find stuff about her in magazines i’d cut it out and put it in a shoebox, but i’d never look at it again. I didn’t know what to do after awhile. I miss her and I love her so much and I still do, but I hurt her more than she had ever hurt me. She left me for a few months to chase her dreams, I just up and ran away from her because I didn’t know how to survive loving her so far away. I never tried to call her again because I didn’t know what to say".
By the time Spencer was done talking she was sobbing hysterically and Jamie was just sitting there staring at her "Oh My God Spencer…are you kidding?" This entire time you’ve been at Harvard you’ve been head over heels in love with a girl that loves you just as much if not more and you haven’t bothered to try and contact her? ARE YOU COMPLETELY CRAZY????". "I didn’t know what to say to her. I mean I can’t very well just expect her to be like "oh hey Spence….it’s okay that you ran out on me and our life together I don’t mind. It’s okay that I came to your house completely ready to propose to you only to find out that you ran away and didn’t want to be found. I don’t mind let’s get back together". "Hold on…rewind…did you just say PROPOSE??". Spencer sighed…"Yah, Clay told me that the night Ashley had come knocking on our door to announce that she had left the tour and was back for good she had left the house devestated. She had also left on our kitchen table a blue tiffany’s box with a diamond ring in it and hand scrawled note on a napkin that said "so much for spending the rest of my life with you" and she walked out. By this time Jamie was ready to kill Spencer. "Okay Spencer this is fate, fate has HANDED you another chance at the love of your life…could you please please please try not to fuck this up". "No…no I won’t do it Jamie. I can’t just go back and expect her to still love me" "Umm stupid…were you listening to her concert? She does still love you!!! Move your ass NOW" and with that Jamie threw Spencer out of her dorm room without her keys. "I’m not letting you back in until you talk to her so get going". And Spencer had no choice but to make her way back to Avalon with her hands in her pockets staring at the ground.
