Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 15: Oleanna)
John: “You have to look at what you are, and what you feel, and how you act. And, finally, you have to look at how you act. And say: If that’s what I did, that must be how I think of myself.”
Carol: “…I…I don’t understand.”
~Oleanna, David Mamet~

“…Happy birthday, to you!”
The oddly shaped cake rested in the center of a coffee table that was covered with a white tablecloth with the words “Happy Birthday!” and “You’re Amazing!” in cryptic yellow and blue writing. The flames of the candles dashed madly away from a pair of puckered teenage lips, as if knowing full well their days were numbered. Whisps of black smoke trailed upward, sucked into the atmosphere.
Three different colors of icing layered the cake, which was titling towards the left side, evidently not in the running for any culinary awards that might be handed out. Ashley dipped a finger into the icing and licked the sugar substance from under her fingernail, blushing slightly knowing Spencer had spent five hours constructing the cake, at one point inhaling a large quantity of baking soda that was sucked into her nostrils following a legendary: Ah-choo-Uhn-Spencer sneeze, which was a combination of a normal, human-like sneeze, followed by a sudden intake of breathe through her nose, a medical mystery that still baffle scientists to this day.
It was her birthday, she was thirteen to be exact, and let’s just say she was damn happy to have made it this far. It was summer, which meant no school, and her dad was currently serving three months in county jail for some barroom brawl, in which he had thrown a broken bottle at the man three stools down from him. This might have been typical behavior for her father, however the victim of his assault was an off duty cop, who’s wife had just divorced him for some car salesman from Missouri, so let’s just say the guy was not in the best of moods.
Unfortunately, Ashley’s mom had to work overtime to pick up the slack at home, seeing as her husband considered kicking back in a recliner and calling his wife a fat whore, to be somehow a means of monetary accumulation. She did manage to ring Ashley around lunchtime to tell her happy birthday, that she loved her, and unfortunately turning thirteen did not give her exclusive rights to the candy cabinet in the kitchen.

Holy crap!! that was really, really good. Yes, this is definately an interesting side of Spence to see….both of them in the bathroom, and then Spence appearing to freak when Aiden arrived….Spence makin the first move in the shed. It’s so funny to try and picture Aiden as an out of shape dork. haha. Can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen next…or in the past…or whatever the next chapter holds.

I don’t think any comment I could leave you would truly show my appreciation for it. There is so much to say about this chapter, and really just about your writing in general that I don’t even know where to start. I’m really impressed with how creative of an individual you are. Each chapter of this story is almost completely different from the last in terms of the imagery that you use, and yet all of the chapters seem to fit together. I’ll leave you another comment on this later because a million thoughts ran through my head while I was reading this post, and I can’t remember most of them right now.
