Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 23: Ignore That Man Behind the Curtain…He is Weak, and all but Disappearing)

Ignore that Man Behind the Curtain…He is Weak, and all but Disappearing

The loudspeaker blared above his head, startling him, his fingers almost losing grip on his cup of coffee. He looked down into the cup, tiny pieces of white powder swirling around on the surface, refusing to dissipate and meld with the brown liquid. His fingers shook the paper cup, the powder now stuck to the edge, defiant, refusing to sink to the bottom. Aiden walked over to the trash receptacle and dropped it down the hole where it landed with a clunk.

Nervously, he began to chew on his fingernail, confused by the odd metallic taste that permeated his tongue. Upon further inspection, he realized that a bit of Spencer’s blood had become trapped under his nail. The bleeding underneath Spencer’s bandages wouldn’t stop, so he had to pull the car over. The fresh towel Spence had brought with her was now soaked, threatening to bleed all over the leather interior of Aiden’s car. Spencer had called him an asshole when he told her to get out of the car, trails of blood careening down her leg and into her flip-flop. Spencer had to sit on the side of the road with her leg up, while Aiden had cleaned the cut and reapplied a fresh bandage. He kept asking Spencer if his actions were hurting her, but she just stared off across the road, the streetlight cascading down upon her wound. He felt sickened. A nasty taste began to creep up into his mouth as he pushed down on the cut, and then reached frantically to apply the bandage before the blood started pouring out again.

There were now seven cuts on her thigh, he counted them when they were in Spencer’s bathroom. Aiden wondered why the number seven, not five or eight. It suddenly occurred to him that maybe there had been more, that Spencer sometimes cut herself in the same spot, once the skin had healed. His brain raced back to seven months ago, when he had felt them for the first time, in Spencer’s pool the night of his seventeenth birthday. At first, he thought his hand was flat against the side of the pool. Moments later he realized that he had been groping Spencer’s thigh. Hours later, he saw the pinkish lines on her thigh as she struggled to put her clothes back on. Without thinking, he placed a warm palm on top of them. Spencer stopped rushing and just sat there with her back to him on the bed, letting his hand rest there a few moments, until she pushed it off and finished getting dressed.

    2. This is too much…they are both in love with Ashley, so they look to each other. I just don’t understand though…what is stopping them from being “with” ashley? They are in love with her…I’m just so confused and lost as to why neither spencer nor aiden can come to terms with being in love with ashley…I mean at least to just be friends with her. You know what all this confusion means….you need to post more and SOON!
