Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 36: Intimate Projection)

Spencer’s verbal blows struck the invisible mirror that faced her. Her reflection stared back at her, but she held her ground, determined to fight, her mind and body pooling with strength, her veins throbbing with pressure, needing Ashley to beat her, to force the blood to the surface, rip open her skin, digging her nails inside the soft tissue.

Her reflection began to falter, dropping to its knees, while Spencer stood tall, tearing herself from its grasp, now a lone entity, no longer crumbling. The passion and truth that laced each of Spencer’s words, undeniably directed at herself.

A hand had reached down inside her, into the dark depths of her soul, her fingertips brushing through cobwebs and dust that had taken years to form, clawing desperately and blindly for what resided within the darkness; pulling it forth into the light where it could thrive in the sunlight, exposed and naked, waiting to be confronted.

Then it was done. Spencer’s hand crept up to her face, surveying the damage. She dropped to her knees and sat on the ground with a grunt, her ribcage throbbing and her stomach sore.

She glanced up with one eye, the other refusing to open, and locked eyes with Ashley who was shaking violently, her eyes darting from Spencer’s face to her swollen, bloody hand.

Ashley dropped to her knees and began to crawl towards Spencer, her kneecaps clicking against the tile. She brought her left hand up hesitantly to touch the already swelling and bruised cheek.

Ashley’s lip trembled and her eyes fell on the box of razor blades, as if part of her wanted to end her life, the blinding rage and hurt having faded away, as she now faced the recipient of her internal battle, a war each girl had waged against themselves, as if both became the mirror to the other, each lashing out at their own image, flushing the turmoil from their tortured systems.

Spencer grabbed Ashley’s hand that still rested on her cheek. Ashley’s eyes still focused on the box. Most likely wanting out, desiring to disappear like a crafty magician, only to hole up once again in the darkness, exchanging one self destructive technique for another.

“It’s okay. This is how it had to be.” Spencer squeezed Ashley’s hand, her face grimacing from the sudden pressure.

A tear dripped from Ashley’s chin onto the tile. It followed along a crack in the tile, mixing with the white powder from one of Spencer’s pills.

She tore her brown eyes away from the box, meeting Spencer’s stare. She reached over and grabbed a clean towel that had toppled to the floor, raising it to Spencer’s face.

    “I know.”

    1. Ok so I think I just let out my first real breath. That was absolutely amazing. It good to see all of this finally coming together. I have to admitt I still really don’t undertand Aiden’s “role” is this, if you call it. But it’s stil amazing none the less. But I want to know why it has to be like this! And what had to be like this? Why did Ashley literally have to kick the shit out of Spencer?? Please post again soon.

All of it. The day I killed that bird when we were down by the creek, it all changed! You killed it! Just like my parents, goddamn Madison, Aiden!”—so does that mean spencer killed the bird and not ash…?
