A Day in the Life, Part 2 of 3

Besides, Tina was straight. And in a relationship, apparently. Still, Bette had felt something. It made her feel wistful that she wouldn’t get to explore it.

“Forget this,” Bette muttered. She glanced at the clock. It was lunch time.

She stood up and grabbed her bag. “James, I’m going to lunch. I’m just going to run down to that deli I liked that one time, remember? You brought me a sandwich from there that I liked. Pastrami.”

“Oh yeah,” James said thoughtfully. “Carson’s. It’s like, two blocks away.”

“I can find it,” Bette said.

“I’ll go, if you want,” James offered. “It’s really busy in there at lunchtime. I know how you hate crowds.”

“It’s fine. I need to get out of the office. Can I bring you something back?”

James held up his canvas sack. “Got my lunch right here.”

“See you in a bit then.” Bette hestitated at the door. “Two blocks this way?” she asked, pointing to her left.

“Other way. You’ll see it. This side of the street,” James replied.

“Got it.” Bette stepped out into the sunshine and resisted the urge to stretch in the warmth. Two blocks wasn’t that far, and she needed to clear her head. She decided to walk.

Her mind let go of the vague memories of the woman she’d encountered that morning as she walked down the street. Arriving at her destination, she pushed open the door of the crowded deli and got in line. Bette didn’t make eye contact with anyone around her, hoping to avoid any random chatter directed her way. Bette placed her order – pastrami on rye with a small cobb salad – and ignored the funny look the cashier gave her. She moved over to another part of the counter to wait for her order when something very cold landed on her foot. She gasped and looked down.

A little girl, perhaps 4 or 5, had sloshed juice on her foot. The child looked at her with big eyes. “I’m sorry,” she said.

“Kendra! What did you do? Tell the lady that you’re sorry,” the little girl’s mother instructed.

    “I did,” Kendra insisted.

“Sorry, miss,” the mother said, pulling the little girl towards the door.

    1. You are one of those people that when you post, I feel like doing the dance Snoopy does at supper time. I can tell you, that right now, my feet are acting of their own accord. I’m on the verge of hopping out of my chair, throwing my head back, my arms outward, and gettin’ down like Snoopy. ;P “Tom” and “Meg” have all the chemistry I’d expect. I can’t wait for part three. Thanks for posting! *mwah*
