A Day in the Life, Part 3 of 3*
“Oh, I called Shane first,” Alice said. “She’s indisposed at the moment.”
Bette knew what that meant. “I’ll bet. Look Alice, I’d love to stand here and talk but –”
“So, where are you going?” Alice interrupted. “You never go out.”
“I’ll have you know that just last night –”
“Oh? Who is she? Are you seeing her again tonight?” Alice asked eagerly.
Bette sighed in annoyance. Alice never let her talk. “No, I’m not. I met someone else this morning on my way home from last night.”
Alice let out a short whistle. “I gotta say, that’s more action in the last 24 hours than you’ve had in the last 6 months,” she teased.
“Oh shut up, Al. I don’t tell you everything, you know.”
“Yes you do,” Alice said, matter-of-fact.
Bette ignored the comment, knowing it was true. “Anyway, I saw her this morning and ran into her again at lunch, so I asked her out for tonight. Her name is Tina.”
“Wait, you ran into her again? Is she stalking you? Or the other way around?”
“No, of course not,” Bette said, exasperated. “It’s like fate, you know? Meant to be.”
“Bette, you’ve told me many times that you don’t believe in destiny. Now you do?”
“That was before this happened.”
“Uh huh. Right. And so now, Bette Porter, cynical realist, believes in fate enough to make a date with someone she bumped into twice on the same day.”
“Yes. I suppose I do.”
“Huh. I kind of hope it works out, I could probably spin an article on how you met. ‘Serendipitous Sweethearts’. I like that for a title…”
“Al, it’s our first date. And it’s not even really a date. She has a boyfriend.”
“A boyfriend?”
“You heard me.”
“Bette,” Alice said suspiciously. “Does she know that this is a date? I mean, does she know that you think it’s a date? Does she even know that you’re lesbian?”
“Yes, yes, and yes, Alice. I wanted to see her again and she wanted to see me, too. That’s what it comes down to.”
“Uh huh. So where are you going?”
“Just to dinner.”
“Where?”
“Look Alice, I really have to get going,” Bette hedged, unwilling to give Alice an exact location. She wouldn’t put it past her friend to show up to get a look at Tina, embarrassing everyone in the process. “I’ll call you tomorrow and let you know how it went, okay?”
