A Life I Never Meant Chapter Eleven

I finally got to move to my own room today. The doctor says that unless there are any unforeseen complications I should be out of the hospital all together within the next week. Even though everyone seems to be happy about this I am beginning to think that it’s not because they are happy that I’m getting better.

For instance Bette seemed more relieved than anything. So far we seems to have the visitation rota thing perfectly orchestrated. Bette comes in the morning, followed by Tina and Alice in the afternoon. Of course they don’t come close enough together so that there are any awkward meetings in the hospital hallways. Part of me is tempted to stop Bette from leaving one day so that she’ll still be here when Tina and Alice turn up. The other part of me knows that this could have ramifications beyond what might be under my control, so I leave it, at least for the time being.

Kit came with Bette this morning and I have to say it was good to see her. I got to catch up on everything that’s been happening at The Planet, including who’s been hitting on Bette. This is one of mine and Kit’s favourite games. Watching to see the levels of disappointment of all of these woman’s faces when Bette turns them down. Of course the real fun that could be had in this games is to see the look on the face of the woman that Bette doesn’t dismiss out of hand. One day that is going to happen, it’s just a matter of when.

As I wait for Tina and Alice to show up I continue with the process of trying to piece together what happened just before the accident happened. I remember talking to Bette on the phone, asking her what we were going to do that evening, then I can remember the sound of brakes and the smell of burning rubber. Then it gets to the frustrating part. I can’t remember anything else from then until I’m in the ambulance and even then it’s hazy.

In between the charade that is Bette, Tina and Alice avoiding each other I’ve had colleagues from work come to see me but even they don’t seem to be able to fill in the gaps. Maybe they just don’t want to tell me, but I think that I would rather know than have this constant gap in my memory. I’m deep in thought when Alice comes barrelling in through the door.

    1. This story is so frustratingly anti-Bette. Why should she be apologizing to Alice? The latter is the one who convinced and helped Tina move eastward, and then she up and followed suit. I don’t get this depiction of Bette at all. You’ve got her stuck pining after Tina’s stupid ass, blaming herself for the downfall of the relationship, and then you make her out to be the bad guy because of her “obstinance.” Hello??? Friendships are a two-way street. Alice could have picked up the phone at any time during the past five years to apologize for overtly and egregiously taking sides. Jeez! With friends like her, I say good riddence. Oh yeah, it’s also frustrating that you don’t provide any answers to any of the comments your readers leave. Double jeez! :^)

    2. Nice depiction of the softening of reserve in one usually reticent. I can understand where Shane’s coming from having had the experience of waking in the hospital and wondering what happened. And yes, that kind of thing tends to make one a bit more direct.

    3. OK, enough is enough. In the authors note of every chapter I have posted I have thanked everyone for leaving the comments and I do read them and take them seriously, but ultimately it’s my story and I want to tell it in the way that I believe in. Whether you agree with that is completely up to you, and unless I’m very much mistaken everyone has a choice as to whether they want to read any story on this site, or not as the case may be. But I think the thing that I want to say most of all is that I would appreciate it if wasn’t made personal. Please PM me if you want to know some of my rational behind where I’m going with this story as I am reluctant to give any of the plot away as there are a few twist and turns to come yet. Thanks again for reading.

    4. Loving the line you are taking with this story – coming from a different person’s perspective for each chapter. You have most definately got a lot of unanswered questions and threads which I am confident you will draw together in time, when you’re ready to and whe it will be essential to the story. I loved the line about having a love square instead of a triangle. Great job.

    5. I am enjoying this story. I am in awe of the fanfic writers on this site b/c you have the courage to expose your thoughts to the public, actually complete strangers.Do you remember this from T. Roosevelt? “It is not the critic who counts, not the one who points out how the strong one stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the one who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood! Who strives valiantly, who errs, and comes up short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcomings, but who does actually strive to do the deeds. Who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends themselves in a worthy cause. Who at best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at worst, if they fail while daring, greatly knows that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat!” (Theodore Roosevelt’s “The Struggle to Achieve”)

    6. When Bette and Tina finally meet will the fire be re-ignited or not? Your story has me torn citygirl75 but not in a bad way, in one hand I’m all for Tina and Bette getting back together but on the other hand I’m wanting to see how it could turn out between Tina and Ally, how your story is unfolding just reminds me of fanficchick’s Ashes, ashes story and that was such a sad but very well written story with Bette and Tina moving on from each other but remaining friends. Just keep on posting and thank you.

    7. Really interested in ALL the characters, which is rare for me when reading a story. Hence, it’s great. I’d, of course, like to see Tina and Bette reconcile and possibly get back together, but I’m along for the ride regardless. Keep it up!

    8. I’m still on the fence for a TiBette reunion. I need more information to makes an informed decision. My first instinct based on what I have read is to have both of them cut thier losses, have decent closure and move on but at the same time everything has not been revealed. So I will wait. Post soon!

    9. I think this story is amazing and I am looking forward to seeing where you take it – there is such a sweet longing in all of these women the way you are writing them and I like it. sometimes you can’t let go of the past but you do have to come to terms with your own feelings and the present and I hope all of your characters do that. i hope that doesn’t sound like I’m telling you what to do – because I trust you to tell an interesting story no matter what.

    10. this is a great story and iam enjoying it.. each chapter seems to be setting up the stage for something bigger and you are doing it with great artistic flair. thanks for sharing this story!

    11. i really hope that Tina will give Bette a chance to at least talk…if later she will decide to leave and go back to Ally, then it will be her loss…and i do think Ally is a perfect gf but she’s too perfect, i prefer people with flaws and bette has them and that’s why she’s perfect for tina because tina has them too

    12. Oh, I think I know why Shane was distracted as she was crossing the street! However I’ll respect that you’ll reveal this info when you’re ready. Okay, I’m off to go and get help for my addiction to your story. Please post soon and stay true to yourself and the story you envision.

    13. You go girl. You write this story the way that you want to. As a Tibette fan I will always pull for them but this is your story and you write it the way that your heart tells you to.

    14. City, great chapter. You have a gift for dialog. I don’t care if you respond to comments or not as long as you continue with this amazing story :). Fabulous as always. Thanks

    15. Not so crazy about this post, I think you and the girls are to hard on Bette. But what a great build-up you’ve created here – I can’t wait for the moment where everything blows up!!!! I agree with seven, it’s a little frustrating that you absolutely not answer any of our quiestions. Post soon….

    16. hey i’m really interested in this story, hanging out for the inevitable Bette-Tina encounter!!!hope u don’t disappoint me; and will be glad when Alice and Bette resolve their issues; wouldn’t mind a Shane/Alice hookup eventually…looking forward to next instalment…please write soon.
